Born and raised in the Chicago area, Dr. Michael Vercillo is a trusted, board-certified thoracic surgeon at Northwestern Medicine. He provides expert specialty care for lung cancer, lung nodules, mediastinal tumors, chest wall problems, pleural space disorders, esophageal cancers, and even hiatal hernias. “With more frequent CT scanning done for other complaints, or for screening, we are finding many more lung nodules and lung cancers,” he shares. “Finding these so early gives us the opportunity to cure patient’s lung cancer with surgery.” As his work often addresses serious conditions, he is well known for being upfront and honest with patients, while still maintaining a keen sense of humor. Dr. Vercillo is regularly performing complex and minimally invasive surgeries with excellent outcomes and minimal complications. Much of that is credited to his dedication to proactively taking care of any issues that may arise and investing time in effective communication at every touch point. “I am a genuine person who will speak directly, honestly, and sometimes humorously,” he shares. “I will explain in easy terms what is going on with you, what all treatment options are, and help patients make the best decision for them.” His wife of nine years is also an impressive surgeon, working in general and colorectal surgery, and the two first met while completing their residencies. Outside of his surgical practice, Dr. Vercillo has a true creative side—he plays guitar, bass, drums, and piano. Since high school, he’s kept up with several music projects, which include playing in bands, recording albums, and performing live shows. He is also an avid cook, especially when it comes to the grill, and enjoys poetry, model building, video games, and astronomy.
