Dear Dr. E.—
I can handle pressure in business, so why can’t I just play golf the way I know I can, especially when I’m out there with clients or colleagues? Can sports psychology help with that?
Dear Reader,
Absolutely.
Sports psychology is not just for young athletes. It is for anyone who wants to perform more consistently when it matters.
And golf is one of the clearest examples of why the mental game matters so much.
On the course, pressure has a way of showing up quickly. Confidence wavers. Tension builds. One bad shot can linger far longer than it should. And when you are playing with clients, colleagues, or in something like a Member Guest, it can become even harder to access the game you know you have.
That is often because you have entered what I call the Red Zone, when pressure pushes your brain into survival mode.
At that point, your brain is no longer prioritizing performance. It is prioritizing protection.
It is the same kind of response we see when someone is drowning. If you were drowning, you would not be focused on your golf swing. You would be trying to survive. And even the best golfer in the world cannot play well in survival mode.
That is what pressure does to many golfers.
Here are three places I often start:
That is why many adults hire me during golf season or ahead of important tournaments. They are not looking for more swing advice. They are looking for the mental edge.
And often, that is the edge that makes the difference between hoping you play well and knowing you can.
