Dear Dr. E.—
I keep hearing about athletes using alter egos to help their mindset. Honestly, it sounds a little out there. My athlete is already driven so do they really need to pretend to be someone else to perform?
—Skeptical but Curious
Dear Curious—
I get it. On the surface, it can sound like a gimmick. But here’s the truth: alter egos are one of the most powerful and underutilized tools in mental performance.
And no, it’s not pretending. It’s strategic identity access.
An alter ego isn’t about being fake. It’s about unlocking a version of your athlete that already exists but often gets buried under nerves, perfectionism, or pressure.
Beyoncé created “Sasha Fierce” to silence stage fright. Kobe Bryant became “The Black Mamba” to laser in under pressure. These aren’t tricks. They’re trained mental switches.
Why does it work? Because when athletes feel anxious, their brain slips into survival mode. That’s the Red Zone. Their identity shrinks, their thinking narrows, and performance suffers. But when they step into an alter ego, they access a different part of themselves, one that’s wired for confidence, focus, and control.
One of my athletes, a high school golfer, had the skill to win but couldn’t recover after a bad shot. One mistake turned into a mental spiral. We built his alter ego: “Stone.” Stone didn’t overthink. He reset and moved on. Tapping into “Stone” helped him stay focused, bounce back fast, and shoot his best tournament rounds, earning him a spot on a top college team.
Here’s how to help your athlete build their own:
Bottom line? Your athlete doesn’t need to fake it.
They just need a reliable way to flip the switch so their best self shows up when it counts.
