Dr. Nerissa Fernandes and Dr. Kunal Bakshi can tell you precisely why they chose to become primary care doctors.

Dr. Fernandes, an internal medicine specialist at Rush Hinsdale, was inspired by her father’s experience as a patient. “I felt drawn to specialize in internal medicine because of the profound impact that my dad’s internists had on his care plan during a time he was seriously ill,” says Dr. Fernandes, who sees adults 18 and older. “I was moved by their commitment to his health and wanted to do the same for my patients.”

Dr. Bakshi, a family medicine doctor at Rush Hinsdale who treats children and grown-ups, had such a passion for mental health that he originally wanted to be a psychologist. “But I found the way that probably has the most impact on people’s lives—as far as mental health and just general health—was being a family medicine doctor.”

Both physicians stress the importance of listening to their patients and tailoring their care accordingly.

“Two patients can have the same medical diagnosis,” Dr. Fernandes says, “but my approach and care plan for each one is different based on what matters to them and how the diagnosis and treatment will impact their life.”

As for Dr. Bakshi: ”I consistently prioritize shared decision-making in addressing a patient’s healthcare needs. Whether determining the need for tests or prescribing medications, I ensure that decisions are aligned with the patient’s individual goals and overall well-being.”
