Inside Out

“I can make someone look great on the outside, but if they don’t feel great on the inside, what have I accomplished, as a physician?”
That’s the question that Dr. Jessie Cheung, dermatologist and owner of Cheung Aesthetics and Wellness, started asking herself recently when evaluating the services that she offers her patients.
“Dermatologists have always known that skin reflects internal health. My patients weren’t getting all their questions answered with traditional medicine, so I started taking a larger role in treating their internal health along with their skin,” she adds.
In a new holistic approach, Dr. Cheung is now offering more focused hormonal therapies for patients to treat internal health. “Hormones control everything,” she says.
Bio-identical hormone optimization isn’t just for treating menopause, and the right balance of hormones is safe for men and women. Hormone therapy can have benefits at younger ages, too, including for sexual health.
Dr. Cheung treats a high number of women but also men, who want to look better, feel better, and perform better.
“Regenerative medicine, or age management, is a field that is growing in response to the downward trend in our average life expectancy. Now it’s more clear than ever that inflammation is the root of all disease—not just for our skin, but also internally,” Dr. Cheung says. “We’re getting better at communicating that message to our patients—that it’s important to take care of your insides as well as your outside.”
Lasers and injectables remain the core services at Dr. Cheung’s office, but she’s discovering ways to use them more often in other areas, as well as implementing newer techniques.
“Amnio, Peptides, and now Exosomes have so many positive and impacting benefits to the treatments we offer in our practice. It’s really a very exciting time to be practicing anti-aging medicine,” she says.
Dr. Cheung is also taking her knowledge and know-how to the radio. She will be hosting a show on VoiceAmerica live Internet radio. (She previously hosted The Dermatology Show on Doctor Radio Sirius XM when she was in New York). The new weekly show debuts May 15, and will explore the intersection of health, beauty, and sexual well-being.
“We are trying to normalize discussions around sexual health,” she explains. “We can’t avoid the aging process, but we can help with the effects of it along the way.”
Dr. Cheung’s ideal patients are those who realize that don’t feel or function as well as they used to—or as well as they want to. Her job is to figure how to help you get there.
“We want you to feel, and look, like yourself again,” she adds. “In our practice, we believe confidence is sexy, and we want to give that confidence back to our patients.”
