When Hinsdale Humane Society (HHS) brought back the popular Pet Walk last year, organizers were thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm. “Over 400 people from 91 different communities came out last year. It was incredible for us to see this 30-year tradition back so strong and we heard from so many walkers and runners that they’d missed the community spirit of this special morning,” says Jodie Arquilla, President of HHS.
“The continuity is important. I was moved when a memory popped up on my phone of the walk 10 years ago. I love continuing this family tradition. At the same time, we’re excited about the new crowd we’re attracting by including a timed 5k option. Medals will be presented to celebrate standout finishers” says Board Member Mistie Psaledas.
Board Member Megan Martin explains that the formal 5k event has drawn in many serious runners and advises that those who want a leisurely stroll are still the heart of the morning. “Some people are looking for a wellness experience, spending the morning in a beautiful outdoor environment, some are looking to set a new personal best on their 5k journey. Every single person helps us get more pets to their home, and we’re happy to spend the morning with them.”
After completing the course, which winds through Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve, walkers and runners can enjoy a fun and festive family and pet-friendly block party experience. Charizma Entertainment will spin music and keep the energy high as master of ceremonies. There will be food trucks, boutique shopping for people and pets, activities for the kids and all sorts of surprises.
“The whole morning is a serotonin boost in a feel-good environment,” Jodie says.
It’s a party with a purpose. The vision of HHS is a world where animals experience compassion, care, and respect, free from suffering and neglect. The organization strives to build a community that values the well-being of every animal and sets a standard that extends far beyond the borders of Hinsdale.
This signature Spring event goes a long way towards those goals. It is part of a reinvigorated energy at HHS, where the Board Members and volunteers are creating an open and welcoming environment for humans while making sure animals find loving homes.
In addition to the many adult volunteers who perform essential tasks at the Tuthill Family Pet Resource and Rescue Center every day, there are youth volunteer programs for middle and high school students to spend time fostering their love of animals and passion for advocacy. During the school year, Pawsitive Impact offers middle schoolers a fun and meaningful way to get involved at HHS.
The Teenternship Program gives teens the chance to actively support the daily care of animals at our shelter while working closely with our experienced staff.
Teenterns assist with a variety of important tasks, including opening and closing procedures, cleaning kennels, doing laundry and dishes, feeding and watering the animals, and helping prepare the shelter for the next day.
These young volunteers will likely be out in force at Homeward Bound, along with runners and walkers of all ages. Registration is open online and will also be available the morning of the pet walk.
“It’s truly a reinvigorated organization, doing the most to make sure as many pets as possible are Homeward Bound,” Megan says.

Homeward Bound, the Hinsdale Humane Society Pet Walk is Sunday, May 31, at 21 Salt Creek Lane in Hinsdale, beginning at 8:30 am. Registration and sponsorship information hinsdalehumanesociety.org.
