FROM ITALY WITH LOVE

CARMELA ST. JOHN spent most of her childhood in Altamura, Italy, before she and her family moved to the United States to live the American dream. Having the fondest memories centered around the dinner table, she and her family continued to embrace the Italian way, speaking fluently in Italian while making homemade Italian dishes. Now she shares her roots, giving Hinsdale a taste of Italy by paying homage to her hometown with Altamura.

What does the idea of power mean to you? I believe power comes from within and is brought out through hard work and sacrifice. My mother and father left their home country at a very young age to make a better life in the land of opportunity. They inspired me by teaching me we all have the power to build the life we dream of. Because of what they did, I know I am living the dream they came to this country for.

How can this generation of leaders support the next generation of leaders? I believe leadership is about fellowship. One of the most pleasurable experiences is working with the high school students I hire. I have enjoyed training, mentoring, and empowering them whether it’s been teaching them how to make a pizza or making sure they make eye contact with our customers. I feel rewarded by seeing these kids change as they go from learning to do things right to making decisions about what are the right things to do. My hope is that the experience instills confidence, engages accountability, and encourages them to want to pass it along to others.
