UChicago Medicine’s Cardiac Surgery team now provides cardiovascular surgery services, which will elevate an already excellent cardiovascular program.
Dr. Christopher T. Salerno and Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam are two of UChicago Medicine’s leading cardiac surgeons, with decades of experience addressing the most complex heart conditions. Their specialty is a critical asset to the community—heart failure is the leading cause of death in the United States today, and many patients often face dire conditions.
Dr. Salerno specializes in heart failure, mechanical circulatory support (ventricular assist devices) and heart transplantations, most often treating coronary artery disease and heart valve disease. As a highly regarded surgeon, Dr. Salerno is known for being compassionate, patient, and skilled. He cares for his patients as if they were his own family because when working with complex heart conditions, no other approach will do. An avid researcher and practitioner, he has published several peer-reviewed articles on caring for patients with heart conditions, especially with COVID-19. His clear passion and dedication to caring for others brings tremendous value to the program.
Dr. Jeevanandam similarly brings his unmatched expertise to the program, specializing in the surgical management of heart failure, often in high-risk cases. In his 30 years in the field, he’s performed over 1,500 heart transplants—more than anyone currently operating today—in addition to countless valve reconstructions and total artery bypass surgeries. “My father came over to the U.S. with $8 in the 1960s,” he shares. “He was the ultimate American Dream.” Dr. Jeevanandam’s reputation stems from that deep-rooted hard work, integrity, and dedication. “The UChicago Medicine Cardiac Surgery Program is one of the best in the world,” he shares, “and we now bring that program to the Western Suburbs.”
