There’s always dancing at The Community House (TCH). From Toddler Ballet to Burning Beats cardio class, music and movement fills the air alongside the squeak of sneakers and bouncing basketballs. One night a year, the dancing is a more formal, the air more filled with magic, and the conversation a touch more celebratory. The Holiday Ball, this year happening on December 7, is a culmination of one year’s good work and a look ahead at all that can be accomplished moving forward.
The fitting theme is Winter of Wonder. Chosen by Cochairs Maureen and Chris Kunitz, Dana and Ryan Reko, and Susie and Ian Thorpe, it’s meant to convey a modern take on holiday traditions and allow the brilliant Kristina Taheri and her team to create wintertime scenes with elements of surprise. “It’s not super traditional and we all love how the acronym is WOW because we want people to feel wowed all evening,” Maureen Kunitz explains.
This dynamic group of friends has set a bold goal for fundraising and are committed to reaching or exceeding it through ticket sales, the wine auction, live and silent auctions, and sponsorships, which have become an integral and much appreciated element of The Holiday Ball.
“I only recently learned that The Community House is privately supported and receives no tax dollars. Given how much our families enjoy all the programming, we want to do all we can to make sure it continues and is available to all,” Dana Ryan says.
“We’re always here, and The Community House is a huge part of our lives. We’ve hosted birthday parties for the kids here, Stage Door Theater is a treasure, and we have a budding chef who has taken cooking classes here.” Susie Thorpe says.
A successful Winter of Wonder will ensure that all our neighbors have access to enrichment programs and support services. The evening will have a special focus on the SPARK Youth Development Initiative, which is dedicated to unlocking the potential of youth in unincorporated Willowbrook.
It is a comprehensive approach that goes beyond academics and fosters growth in every possible way. There’s personalized mentoring, captivating field trips, and enlightening career exploration, all planned to ignite sparks within young minds. Knowing that life is challenging, and everyone can use an expert to listen and help, licensed clinical counselors provide essential mental health services without the worry of large hourly fees. SPARK mentors guide young minds through homework help and social and emotional wellness activities during the school year. In the summer months, pool days and off-site adventures add fun-filled memories.
Because of the tremendous support from Holiday Ball guests and sponsors, plus thoughtful fundraising year-round, these services are provided at affordable rates that help enrich the lives of each student and family.
Thoughtful leadership from TCH has bolstered the SPARK Initiative through the years. It opens doors for participants and for volunteers and mentors who meet wonderful young people with whom they might not otherwise cross paths. “The connections are everything,” Dana says.
Winter of Wonder is the ideal night out for couples and friends. The energy of TCH Board of Trustees, the Co-chairs, and Host Committee is infectious in the best possible way. At the heart of The heart of The Community House is community and being a part of this special night is the best way to celebrate it.
