Lake Barrington just got a whole lot chicer with its newest women’s shopping experience, The Sélectionner Boutique. Located at 22000 North Pepper Road, the boutique opened its doors this past March and specializes in contemporary brands, styles, and fits, all with a modern, yet vintage flair.
Owner Jacey Silverberg, alongside her husband, Charlie, who has an extensive wholesale and retail-distribution background, handpicks clothing designers, one-of-a-kind vintage pieces, unique jewelry, scarves, handbags, and gifts. Unlike big-box retailers, The Sélectionner Boutique’s curated collection avoids fast fashion and mass quantities, ensuring the shopper will be delighted with items that flatter their unique individuality and style.
“We look for brands and designers who are innovative and contemporary and slightly cutting-edge without being overpoweringly trendy and temporary,” explains Silverberg. Focusing on an easier silhouette, the lines carried in-store and online offer modern, yet classic, comfortable fits for everyone. Whether the woman is age 30 or 80, size extra small or extra large—and anyone and any size in between—The Sélectionner has something for everyone.
“The Sélectionner Boutique’s customer is the woman looking for that elusive dress, a great-fitting pair of jeans, and a girl’s-night-out outfit or a date-night blouse that inspires confidence, comfort, and, most importantly, self-love, with affordable luxury and quality in mind,” Silverberg observes. With the boutique’s vintage pieces, Silverberg takes those unique prints, colors, and patterns into consideration when selecting the entire collection, curating a variety of items for the woman who prides herself on being edgy and different.
Silverberg looks for unique brands that have a story like handmade, smaller batches, women-owned, or independent. “I might find a brand or designer while on vacation or hear from one of my customers about a brand they love,” she says. “That’s the beauty of our assortments and the way we curate our collections.” Some of the more well-known brands carried at the store include Karen Kane and Liverpool sourced from Chicago-based showrooms, but some designers may be well known in another way. “We carry Calvin Tran, The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection’s breakout-star designer, for example,” she says.
Choosing Barrington for the boutique’s location was an easy decision for the Silverbergs. “We love where we live and our surrounding Barrington community,” she says. “We wanted to open quickly, and I saw this as an opportunity to collaborate locally,” recalls Silverberg. The couple turned to locally owned businesses they knew and trusted like Cashmere & Chrome and Big Sky Custom Woodwork for design and build out of the store, imPRessions for public relations, graphic designer Lynn Kupczyk, and local clothing and jewelry designers.
The boutique’s name is derived from the French version of “curate.” “When I choose what goes in my store, I spend a lot of time thinking about the women in my life and what would make them happy and confident and showcase their personal style,” says Silverberg. “Therefore, I curate my collections with my customers’ bodies and spirits in mind.” The vibrant gold snake in the boutique’s logo alongside the store’s name symbolizes creativity, femininity, transformation, and renewal, with the slight edginess of a viper. “Because there is just a little viper in all of us,” she shares.
The feel of the store is girl’s-night in. “Lounge in our living room, browse all the pretty things, laugh with your friends, and take a confident strut around the store when you find that fantastic outfit,” says Silverberg. “We have an incredible collection of clothing and accessories, but our personalized styling service ensures a singular experience.”
Shoppers can expect to be greeted by Silverberg herself and photos of Silverberg’s grandmother, Lil, who serves as the main inspiration behind the boutique’s designs and styles. “I remember being in awe of my Nana’s clothes, always mixing prints and loud colors paired with a bright red lipstick,” says Silverberg.
Her own exceptional style, which blends vintage fashion with current pieces, is what Silverberg is known for. “I’ve always been obsessed with fashion, especially vintage pieces, creatively mixing those elements with my everyday wardrobe,” she says. Often being asked where she got her own clothing, she began helping friends ease the anxiety that frequently comes with shopping.
“The Sélectionner Boutique is just starting, and we are having a blast doing it,” says Silverberg. “I’m always up for a fun collaboration, especially if it’s in support of another small or women-owned business or charity.” Silverberg and Kupczyk are launching their own line of vintage and classic tees that will be carried in-store. The label’s name, Despicable Brand Tees, was inspired by hilarious conversations with friends. Additionally, there will be a limited edition of vintage couture upcycled pieces by Kym Kainz. Looks like The Sélectionner Boutique may be Lake Barrington’s ultimate destination for taste, luxury, and humor.
