The Ripple Effect of Kindness

Author Riley Preston Photography by Bridget Emelianchik

LINDENHURST fourth grader Riley Preston seeks to inspire change by sharing stories and ways we can all leave this world a greater place.

In these unprecedented times, there is a call for leaders of all ages to stand up and use their voices. It is for that reason Riley founded Little Leaders, Big Voices—a call to action for children to use their voices and create a wave of kindness and support in their communities. This is an impactful way to show your friends and community how much you want to see everyone succeed. Little Leaders, Big Voices is a platform to engage kids and creates a forum where they can express and share ways to make a difference starting with everyday situations such as those they encounter in school or at the playground.

The first project of Little Leaders, Big Voices is Riley’s debut as an author, with his book Kindness…Pass It On, where he shares how impactful kindness can be. In this inspirational new picture book, the author Riley Preston, age 9, explores the many ways one person can make a huge difference. Starting at a new school, Riley finds it difficult to make friends until he discovers that one small act of kindness can impact the lives of many. Every day we have the opportunity to make good choices. When we choose to show kindness to others, above all else, we will quickly learn that we are capable of making the world a better place…one random act of kindness at a time. There has never been a better time to be kind to others, to have a voice, and to be a leader.

Wellness coach, yoga instructor, and meditation guide Colette McGuire says of Riley’s book, “Kindness…Pass It On is a beautiful story that shows the ripple effect of kindness that children can relate to. From the moment that Riley picks up Bella’s fallen book at the bus stop, I could visualize the children moving through their day. We see that each interaction provides us an opportunity to make a difference. It is a quick and inspiring read to spark discussion and renew hope.”

Riley works with youth through his messages on leadership, kindness, and perseverance, and plans to share his message through a variety of programs. He will not only share his book with children, but also talk on topics of resiliency, positive mindset, and discussing emotions. He believes making the world a better place begins with each person. Through his actions such as volunteering at food banks, sharing experiences, and helping to take care of others, he believes his actions will create a wave of kindness in this world.

Riley is always up for new adventures and loves to learn through experience. He cannot wait for everyone to share his book with the kids in their lives. He is hosting book discussions to help promote the dialogue around kindness and to help others think of unique ways to help their communities. When he is not working on Little Leaders, Big Voices, he enjoys skateboarding and riding his dirt bike. He also loves to play baseball and is favorite baseball team is the Chicago Cubs.

Family friend Jennifer Bergschneider shares, “This little man is so much more than a baseball player, horseback rider, and all-around good kid. Riley sees the way the world should work and at his tender age he is hoping to change it one act at a time. He is selfless in all things that he does. I am amazed at the way he inspires everyone to be better.”
