The first thing The Monarch San Antonio sent for me was a Rolls-Royce.
It was an impressive introduction to a hotel where luxury lies as much in thoughtful service as in grand gestures. On my visit, a private driver met me at the airport and brought me downtown to the newly opened hotel. Champagne awaited at check-in, along with the sort of warm welcome that makes an unfamiliar place feel easy. The car made a glamorous first impression, but the welcome is what set the tone for my stay.
The Monarch San Antonio, Curio Collection by Hilton, opened in March 2026 in the Hemisfair District. Its 17 stories rise near the River Walk and the Alamo, putting some of the city’s most inviting places within walking distance. The staff was attentive without hovering, a balance that can be difficult to strike. As I settled into my suite, I felt that the details of my stay had already been considered. That sense of being looked after followed me from the lobby to dinner and, unexpectedly, all the way to departure.
A ROOM AND A NEIGHBORHOOD WORTH EXPLORING
My suite was spacious and beautifully appointed, but the private balcony made me want to linger. With San Antonio below me, I could sit with a glass of wine and watch the city instead of rushing to my next reservation.
When I did venture out, La Villita Historic Arts Village was a short walk away. Its small historic buildings, galleries and shaded courtyards offer a change of pace from the hotel’s contemporary surroundings. I wandered past jewelry, paintings and textiles, letting one storefront lead me to another. With its mix of architecture and artisans, the village gave me a sense of the city that I would never have found from a hotel balcony alone.
That is one of The Monarch’s strengths: you can return to a polished hotel without feeling removed from the city you came to see.

DINNER WITH A SENSE OF OCCASION
My first dinner at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Oak & Amber, began with champagne. I followed it with a glass of Barolo, oysters with caviar and a beautifully prepared Wagyu steak. The team had other ideas for my meal, too. They encouraged me to try a hash brown loaf topped with salmon roe and crème fraîche, plus lobster mac and cheese. By then I had stopped pretending this would be a modest dinner.
I did not expect the Brussels sprouts to be a highlight. Roasted until caramelized and finished with apple cider vinegar, they were good enough to compete with the steak. Dessert brought a chocolate soufflé, strawberry shortcake and gelato. It was a generous meal, and the pleasure was in taking my time with it. At a restaurant like this, the next course can be a pleasant surprise rather than a cue to check your watch.

AN AFTERNOON ABOVE THE CITY
After a morning out, I headed for the rooftop pool. From a lounge chair above San Antonio, a frozen cocktail in hand, I could happily set aside the day’s itinerary. The atmosphere was relaxed, the service polished, and the warm weather especially welcome after leaving Chicago. I could look out over the city while enjoying a break from the schedule that usually follows me on a trip.
For anyone watching fall arrive at home, San Antonio offers an appealing change of scene. You can spend the morning exploring and still have an afternoon by the pool.
THE DETAIL I WILL REMEMBER
My flight home was delayed, and I expected the usual awkward stretch between checkout and the airport. Instead, the hotel extended my checkout until 4 p.m. I had time for a light meal before the driver returned to take me to the airport in the Rolls Royce.
I have stayed in beautiful hotels around the world. What I remember most is rarely the thread count or the chandelier. It is how people responded when my plans changed. At The Monarch, someone noticed what would make those extra hours easier and took care of it. My delayed flight became an opportunity to enjoy the suite a little longer, rather than an inconvenience to manage on my own.
I remember the balcony, the dinner and that frozen cocktail above the city. Most of all, I remember that for a few days someone else was thinking about the little things. I didn’t have to.
