As a certified kitchen and bath designer, Judy Baker Blanks prides herself on customer service and a personal approach.
Judy Baker Blanks didn’t start her career in the kitchen and bath industry. But when a friend’s husband needed help with his cabinetry dealership, Blanks got involved and never looked back. That was more than 25 years ago and today, the certified kitchen and bath designer couldn’t be happier with where she has landed. “It’s changed a lot,” explains Blanks, who has a master’s degree in education and was working as a college teacher when she fell in love with kitchen design. “The interesting part is that when I first started in the business, every client wanted consistency in materials and finishes. Now, clients are asking for a variety of materials—multiple finishes on faucets especially.” As the owner of TKL Design Group (the TKL stands for “The Kitchen Lady,” her nickname), Blanks primarily designs traditional style spaces. However, even the definition of traditional is changing. “Several years ago, everyone wanted their kitchens updated using natural finish woods for their cabinets. They wanted natural stone countertops, and everyone wanted an island,” she says. “Now my clients are interested in painted white cabinetry and storage space is a priority.” As a certified kitchen de- signer, Blanks is committed to continuing education. She regularly attends classes and industry conventions so that she can bring new ideas to her clients. But what is inherent in her approach to client service is natural to Blanks. Her client promises are to always start on time, to always put you in touch with carpenters about expectations, and to always provide detailed, professional drawings of the work. “One of the most important things when working with a client is listening,” she says. “The second most important thing is making sure your client knows you are listening.” Finally, Blanks says it’s important that the client feels like they are a part of the design process. And while more trained designers are now coming into the industry, Blanks’ reputation for professionalism and put- ting the client first has helped her business stand the test of time.
