TELL ME ABOUT YOUR APPLE FESTIVAL
Barrington resident Meg Cappel brings the warmth of small-town tradition and family storytelling to young readers with her debut children’s book, Tell Me About Your Apple Festival, releasing September 14.
Inspired by her Southern Illinois roots and the beloved Murphysboro Apple Festival™, now celebrating its 75th year, the story follows young Betty, whose bedtime question blossoms into a tale of apple pies, parades, and traditions that have connected her family for four generations. A portion of book proceeds will support the festival.
After leaving a 15-year advertising career to raise her family, Cappel returned to writing, inspired by conversations with her daughter. Her work celebrates the family, faith, and traditions that shaped her upbringing and continue to guide her life in Barrington.
Cappel will celebrate the book at Barrington’s Bell House Books with “Appletime on Applebee Street” events on September 17 and 19, featuring storytime, book signings, apple-themed crafts, and appearances with illustrator Paula J. Maloney.

This fall, The Arboretum of South Barrington invites visitors to step inside Duchess Manor Haunted House, open September 19 through November 1. Filled with eerie scenes, unexpected encounters and chilling surprises, Duchess Manor offers two ways to enjoy the Halloween season.
Guests looking for a fright can visit during regular evening hours for the full haunted house adventure. Scare actors, automated effects, and immersive scenes bring the mysterious story of the Duchess to life, with something unsettling waiting around every corner. For younger visitors and those who prefer fewer scares, special “Lights On” walkthroughs will be offered Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., when scare actors are not present and automated effects are disabled.
