TEAM EFFORT
The 2020-2021 school year has begun, and due to COVID-19 many schools have spent the last few months working to procure enough laptops to support a digital learning environment for students. In August, two Hinsdale residents—DuPage County Board Member GREG HART and DAVID ANDALCIO, CEO of Wynndalco Enterprises—stepped in to help and arranged a $20,000 donation of 50 laptops and two mobile LAN carts to Bensenville’s Fenton Community High School. “The COVID-induced shift to remote learning is exacerbating inequality of opportunity for many students without access to sufficient technology. These challenges are often faced by students in majority-minority school districts,” explains Hart on the decision to work with Fenton Community High School. This isn’t the first time the duo has made a commitment to educational equity—Hart helped spearhead a DuPage County initiative to provide internet service at no-cost to low-income online learning students during the pandemic. Andalcio has helped provide technological needs to school systems in Chicago, New York, Dallas, and more. Here’s to starting the school year off on the right foot!
STAR BRIGHT
Jewelry designer extraordinaire, Frédéric Zaavy, shares his life, love, travels, and work in a new book, STARDUST. The jeweler who considered himself the heir of John Baptiste Tavenier, gem dealer to Louis XIV, mastered the art of painting with stones to craft spectacular jeweled creations. Although Zaavy passed away in 2011, Dianne Dubler, John Bigelow Taylor of Kubaba Books, and Gilles Hertzog bring to life his work in stunning photography and words—a project Zaavy worked on until his last days.
