As young designers, Chicago natives Alicia and Robert Segal journeyed to Finland to live and work for legendary design house, Marimekko. After five years abroad, they returned to Chicago and remaining inspired by the joyful simplicity and quality of life they felt in Scandinavia started home furnishings company, UNISON, in 2006. Launching with a colorful, graphic collection of bedding and throw pillows that focused on simplicity with the highest production standards, the collection soon grew to tablecloths and linens. Today, Unison’s collections exist alongside 20+ designers and artists with products for every room of the house. The HINSDALE HISTORICAL SOCIETY’s newest exhibit—Remembering Pearl Harbor & WWII, Hinsdale’s War Efforts at Home & Abroad—opened this winter at the Hinsdale History Museum. As the U.S. entered World War II, Hinsdaleans were among the many who stepped up, eagerly serving their country both at home and overseas. Hinsdale was home to almost 1,500 active-duty service members and the civilians who stayed home contributed to a nationally recognized canning organization and scrap metal drives—all to serve the war effort. Hinsdale’s contributions were significant, especially given its population of only 7,836 in 1940. The exhibit features the faces of the locals who served abroad and supported war efforts from the Hinsdale community. The exhibit is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, and by appointment.
