The first comprehensive book in over three decades dedicated to the iconic mansion—and the first ever to explore its remarkable interiors and art collections. Written by Darren Poupore, director of curatorial affairs at Biltmore, and art historian Laura C. Jenkins, the book delves into the house’s rich history using a wealth of documents preserved by Vanderbilt’s descendants, including sketches, letters, diaries, receipts, and customs records. With stunning photography by renowned interiors photographer William Abranowicz, the book transports readers through the grand rooms of Richard Morris Hunt’s French Renaissance château. From the Winter Garden to the Banquet Hall and Tapestry Gallery, the interiors come alive with treasures amassed by Vanderbilt, including works by Monet, Renoir, Sargent, and Whistler; priceless Renaissance tapestries; rare books; and exquisite French and English furnishings. The book also explores Vanderbilt’s relationships with leading art dealers and decorators of the time, shedding light on the commercial networks that shaped Biltmore’s collections. A first-ever look at Vanderbilt’s 22,000-volume library—featuring rare architectural and art books—reveals connections between his literary collection and the house’s design. Additionally, many objects are brought out of storage for the first time, allowing for a restored look at the house as it was in the 1890s. © Biltmore House: The Interiors and Collections of George W.
