A Winnetka native and lifelong fashion lover, MARGARET NELSON was sketching designs long before heading to Phillips Academy Andover. At the University of Wisconsin–Madison, she witnessed the e-commerce boom through Shopbop, a digital shift that, combined with studying fashion history in Florence, solidified her career. Her journey led her to Vogue, assisting legends like Carine Roitfeld and Arthur Elgort. Ready for a more hands-on role in design, she knocked on Lilly Pulitzer’s president’s door and told him, “You need to hire me.” He did. She went on to spend years as a merchandiser for Lilly across New York City, the Hamptons, Palm Beach, and Philadelphia, collaborating globally to bring fashion designs and assortments to life. After relocating to Chicago for her husband’s career, she became head of fashion for startup Mott50. Then came “two babies in 14 months,” followed by two more, and a joyful pivot to focus on home. Today, she channels her creative spirit into board work, styling, and the beautiful chaos of raising four young children.
What’s on the horizon? My twins are about to graduate preschool, so I’m finally coming up for air. I’m focused on giving back through four boards, including the Woman’s Board of Rush University Medical Center. Life expectancy in Chicago varies dramatically by zip code—an unacceptable reality Rush is working to change, and I’m proud to support that mission. I’m ready to reclaim some structure and find my way back to styling—or maybe jewelry. I’m surrounded by ambitious, creative women who inspire me nonstop. First, I may need to catch up on sleep
