Shore Vs. City

Nisha York wearing Ted Baker, available at Central Boutique in Highland Park PHOTOGRAPHY BY APRIL GRAVES OF LIGHT DRAWN STUDIOS / EDITORIAL STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA

Lake Forest’s Nisha York is always one to look on the bright side. She feels grateful for the “pause” life has provided, allowing her to reconnect with what matters most, from meaningful conversations during daily family dinners to long bike rides. As she recognizes that the rhythm of life has been adjusted only temporarily, she is thankful that her lens has been fine-tuned to now focus on appreciating the simple joys of life, a concept her beloved late father lived by. York pauses to share her city and shore faves with Sheridan Road.

What’s on the horizon? Adjusting to the start of school with three kids at three different schools Mantra? Strive for excellence, not perfection Best grooming tip? Invest in a good magnifying mirror Guilty pleasure? Escaping mid-day to the theater for a movie with girlfriends Favorite foods? Sushi and anything chocolate Music you love? I teeter between extremes—I love ’90s hip hop but studied classical violin for 15 years, so Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor still gives me chills Best advice ever given to you? Focus on what you are in control of, forget about what you aren’t Best advice you’ve given? Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want; the worst someone can say is “no” Earliest memory? My mom in a rocking chair next to my crib in the middle of the night. She has always been my rock—it doesn’t surprise me that she is my first memory When you wake up, you? Get on the Peloton Before bed, you? Take a shower and put on my favorite robe What’s on your bookshelf? Atomic Habits by James Clear and A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult You can’t live without? My family and my “ride or dies”—you know who you are Love to escape to? Greece Advice you would give to your younger self? Don’t beat yourself up over mistakes you’ve made. Learn from them and move on

ON THE SHORE
Your style is? Casual-Minimalist Can’t leave the house without? Smartwater Transportation? My Honda Odyssey Minivan (fondly known as “The Striker”) Driving music? WBBM Newsradio Place to eat? Lake Forest’s Egg Harbor, with friends for coffee and Greg’s Chili and Eggs. The Bar at The Deerpath Inn for cocktails and dinner Shop? Ha, Costco! I’m on a first-name basis with at least 10 employees Best thing about the Shore? Sense of community and belonging, open spaces, and privacy Worst thing about the Shore? Lack of diversity The perfect day is? A family bike ride to Lake Bluff, picking up lunch, and scouting out a perfect picnic spot

IN THE CITY
Your style is? Chic-Minimalist: My go-to is all black with a splashy accessory and lip color Can’t leave the house without? Shawl/scarf in case it gets cold Transportation? Uber Driving music? A Spotify curated playlist Place to eat? The Peninsula’s Pierrot Gourmet Shop? Mag Mile Best thing about the City? Breadth and depth of everything from food and shopping to the diversity of people and cultures Worst thing about the City? Sirens The perfect day is? An early coffee run with my daughter, a dip in my mom’s rooftop pool, exploring various shops, parks, or attractions with my kids, followed by dinner with my husband
