There’s something special about a summer party. With the sun setting late and the delightful scent of flowers filling the air, a warm weather gathering is relaxed and all about the vibes. Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) is kicking off their 75th year with a Santorini, Greece themed summer soiree that promises new friendships and core memories.
HJWC was founded in 1949 with the mission to enrich the community, the lives of the members and their families. The club made an immediate impact, hosting a Spring Fashion Show and Tea the first year, which raised $800 to purchase an obstetrical table for Hinsdale Hospital. This kind of substantial result, where the community can see the good their donations contribute to the world have likely been key to the continued success of the group.
Seven-and-a-half decades in, generations of local women have found purpose in the impactful philanthropy of HJWC. Over the past few years, during which large numbers of young, vibrant families have moved to the area from Chicago or elsewhere, the club has provided a soft landing for women looking to make both friends and a difference.
Through committee work, service projects for Wellness House, and family events like December’s Jingle Dash, members and their families have many opportunities to lift up the community and find their people.
Each year HJWC provides an average of 20 grants valued between $1-$50,000 to organizations serving women and children. Grant money is awarded to organizations who have needs for items and projects that can be used for many years to come. Vans, playgrounds, building maintenance needs, and equipment are just a small example of the items given. This Grant Fundraising model was launched in 2018. Since then, their tireless efforts have raised $1.4 million dollars for non-profit organizations in Chicago and the Western Suburbs.
In an impressive confluence of humanity, HJWC granted $15,000 to the IWS Family Health Center to purchase a new dental chair. This gift was much appreciated and celebrated by members of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary. Generosity is contagious.
All in, HJWC raised over $301,000 during the 2023- 24 year, which concluded in May. “We’re very pleased to have worked hard and raised funds for many incredible organizations. Our 74th year was strong and next year will be even better,” says Lauren Markham, President of HJWC.
Fresh off this fantastic year, it would be understandable for members to take a well-earned break, but there’s no rest for the givers in this dynamic organization.
Instead, a group of hosts is planning an epic kick-off to their diamond anniversary year. Rosita Kraja will host, turning her already-glorious pool area into a garden of the Greek Gods. “What a dream to host everyone’s favorite summer party here and support the good work of Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club,” she says.
The atmosphere will channel the island’s famous beach vibes and incredible sunsets, setting the scene for an especially beautiful evening. There will be glorious food, a signature drink, photo opportunities, and special auction items.
Summer Party tickets are available, and all are welcome. For women who are new to the area and an excuse to dress up, to spend time with HJWC with thoughts of joining, or both, this is a wonderful opportunity to call a sitter and head out on the town. “We couldn’t be any more excited for this party and the coming year. Membership applications and ticket sales are open, join the fun,” says Markham.
