Dr. Shana Margolis and Dr. Richard D. Southgate are two of Northwestern Medicine’s premier specialists in orthopedics and sports medicine. Dr. Margolis specializes in non-surgical physical medicine and rehabilitation care, while Dr. Southgate focuses on joint replacement and adult reconstruction surgery. Both doctors were attracted to their field for the opportunity to help patients feel, function, and move better to enhance their quality of life. “As the population is aging, a lot of people have painful degenerative conditions, so we need more options to keep people active and feeling and functioning well,” says Dr. Margolis. She treats a range of conditions that include conservative management of spinal conditions like back and neck pain, plus other musculoskeletal conditions such as shoulder or knee pain. She has been listening to patients and collaborating with colleagues for more than 15 years, emphasizing treatment approaches that look at each patient holistically. Outside of medicine, she spends her time cooking, entertaining, traveling and boating with family and friends.
Dr. Southgate, originally from the Midwest, joins Northwestern from the West Coast where he spent time as the site director for surgery residents at Oregon Health & Sciences University and medical director for Arrowhead Orthopaedics. The core of his work addresses arthritis of the hip and knee, plus hip fractures in older adults. “The ability to wake up and help patients get walking and active without pain,” fuels his work, especially in his older patients, many over 80, who, he says “have decades more life experience than I and wisdom to impart.” He is also dedicated to minimizing the narcotics that orthopedic surgeons typically prescribe. Outside of medicine, he enjoys bicycling, running, and is an avid college sports fan.
