ALEX KOTIS RIMMELE originally from the north side of Chicago, moved to Western Springs 23 years ago with her husband John. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola University, a Master of Public Health degree from Roosevelt University, and is an E-RYT 200 registered with The Yoga Alliance. The mom of three boys—Daniel (18), Michael (17), and Matthew (12)—has embraced the local community and her health and fitness background through teaching at The Recreation Center of Western Springs, Elite Fitness and Gym, Hinsdale Adventist Academy, and now founding Grit and Grace Yoga—a new virtual platform for fitness. Grit and Grace Yoga incorporates yoga, dance, sculpt, and high intensity workouts, all of which Rimmele has years of experience in. The fitness guru who believes, “you must take care of yourself so you can be the best version of yourself for your loved ones,” shares some of her best lasts with us:
Last workout class you created that inspired you to get creative?
My friends and family can attest to the fact that every class I choreograph and create comes from some real-life event that has inspired me for the week. Right now, I’m all about Fall Renewal. We are in the process of turning our garage into a home yoga studio!
Last philanthropic event you’ve had the opportunity to participate in?
I am privileged to have been asked to teach introductory yoga classes for CASE, an early childhood collaborative, empowering children and families to reach their greatest potential.
Last student who inspired you?
My dearest friend and yoga client of 8 years, Christine McCarty, is undoubtedly the most inspiring and strong woman I’ve ever met. She makes being smart, kind, passionate, and uber-talented as both a CMO of a major company and her household look like a total breeze. Plus, she’s my right-hand woman, on—our yoga mats—and off, and I truly don’t know what I’d do without her guidance and support.
Last family trip that you’ll cherish for a long time?
Our entire family—my parents, sister, and her family—went to Greece for an entire month last summer! Not only was it a trip of a lifetime, it was our last family trip before COVID-19, which makes it that much more memorable.
Last song or book that inspired you?
Born to Run by Christopher McDougall is one of my favorite inspiring books, because I love to run almost as much as I love yoga! Through the stories of his characters, Christopher McDougall teaches that long distance running is more about cooperation, camaraderie, and caring than about competition. Isn’t that an all-around great life lesson?
