Two fundamental principles form the foundation of Dr. Jeffrey Nathanson’s approach to providing care—the physician-patient partnership and gastrointestinal wellbeing. “Patients are much more than just a collection of symptoms,” he explains. “They are individuals who bring their own experiences and insights to the care interaction. Trust is at the core of that relationship. Once I understand each patient’s perspective, we work together as partners to achieve his or her goals.” Dr. Nathanson says he is delighted to have recently joined longtime colleague Dr. Tara Troy and her team at Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health. “We share a very similar philosophy of care for our patients,” he says. “With compassion and support from a multitude of health care professionals, Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health provides personalized care tailored to meet the unique health and wellness needs of the individual in a modern, comfortable office environment.” In his 15 years of practicing on the North Shore, the focus has always been on wellness. “Whether it be through examining quality of life measures in patients who struggle with irritable bowel syndrome or through preventative cancer screenings, I aim to promote health and wellness in my care,” adds Dr. Nathanson. “This entails looking at the whole person, not just the GI tract, and recognizing that it is a synthesis of diet, fitness, and the brain-gut connection that contributes to our gastrointestinal well-being and overall quality of life.”
Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health is located at 40 Skokie Boulevard, Suite 110, in Northbrook. For more information, call 224-407-4400 or visit compgihealth.com.
SPECIALTY: Gastroenterology EDUCATION: BA, University of Pennsylvania; MD, Rush University School of Medicine; residency in Internal Medicine, University of Chicago; fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, University of Chicago AWARDS/HONORS: Vice President, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (1999); The Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center Medical Staff Prize for Clinical Excellence (2000); Washington Square Scholarship (2000); The American Medical Women’s Association Scholarship and Achievement Citation (2000)
Dr. Tara Troy says that what sets her practice apart is actually in the name—a comprehensive team approach. “I respond to my savvy patients’ requests to get at the root of their problems, and not just prescribe medications to cover up their symptoms. By incorporating nutrition, the mind-gut connection, and the health of the gut microbiome into standard practice, we aim to achieve a higher level of gastrointestinal care,” she explains. Her team includes dietitians, a behavioral counselor, a physical therapist, and a small army of intelligent and passionate nursing professionals. “We listen carefully. We evaluate meticulously. Then we provide personalized care with exceptional quality and sincere compassion,” says Dr. Troy. “One size does not fit all.” By creating a partnership with her patients, she helps identify factors that contribute to digestive issues that the patient can influence or control. This partnership also helps individuals replace feelings of helplessness and frustration with empowerment and well-being. And for procedures, Dr. Troy has created a deluxe “spa-like” comfortable and safe office-based environment. “Using the highest quality technology and techniques, I aim to make the process as pleasant, effortless, and efficient as possible,” she adds. “I am absolutely thrilled to welcome my friend, Dr. Jeff Nathanson, to our comprehensive team.”

A native of Montreal, Dr. Ahmed Farag has lived and practiced in the Chicago area for two decades. He joined Northeast Radiology Associates in July 2000—providing mammography, diagnostic imaging, and counseling services to patients and physicians at Lake Forest Hospital. From 2003 through 2009, he served as Vice Chairman and then Chairman of the Radiology Department at Lake Forest Hospital. We use the latest technology (3D mammography and high-resolution ultrasound) to detect breast cancer as early as possible,” says Dr. Farag, who also has an additional interest in the genetics associated with breast cancer. “We know that waiting for results can be stressful, so we provide all diagnostic imaging results before patients leave our office. Dr. Bloch has been in private practice in Highland Park for more than 35 years. He brings an aesthetic passion to many aspects of his life. For him Plastic Surgery is the union of art and science to create a more idealized human form. The Study of the human form goes back thousands of years. Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing the “Vitruvian Man” illustrates what he believed to be a divine connection between the human form and the universe. The “Golden Ratio” is a mathematical concept that goes back to the ancient Greeks. This ratio can be found in the human form and nature itself. In general the closer we come to achieving this ratio, the more beautiful we perceive it to be. The challenge of Plastic Surgery is to combine surgical skills, techniques, and materials with what the patient brings to the table to create an outcome that more closely approaches the divine.
Dr. Bloch notes, “If there is anything that I’ve learned over the years is to listen more closely to the patient; to ascertain what their desires and fantasies might be. The perfect outcome is when the patient’s expectations are met or exceeded.”
Body by Bloch and Skin Deep Medical Spa are located at 1160 Park Avenue West, Suite 2E, in Highland Park. For more information about Body by Bloch, call 847-432-0840 or visit bodybybloch.com. For more information about Skin Deep Medical Spa, call 847-432-0426 or visit skindeepmedicalspa.com.

The moment you walk through the doors of Dr. Eman Alsahlani’s family dental practice, you can’t help but feel welcome. “One of the best qualities of our practice is that both patients and staff walk into an office that is filled with laughter. We want it to be a homey environment with conversations that make patients feel like family,” she shares. Dr. Alsahlani’s chairside manner and clinical skills have helped her build long-term relationships with generations of North Shore families, many of them reflected in her more than 200 positive patient reviews. “My wonderful staff have been an integral part of our success,” Dr. Alsahlani says, explaining that most of the 18 staff members have been with the practice for up to 35 years. “My colleague Dr. Monim Albazzaz is a perfect fit. Many patients have referred to him as the missing link.” He also shares her family approach to dentistry and a policy that “the doors are always open.” And, while a family-friendly environment is a mainstay for Dr. Alsahlani’s office, safety is an equally important priority. As the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact the community, Dr. Alsahlani’s husband, Dr. Rami Taha, a prominent infectious disease specialist, played an instrumental role in helping her team implement the safest COVID-19 protocols. Among the new safety features in Dr. Alsahlani’s family dentistry practice are the ExtraOral Aerosol Suction units in each of the clinical rooms to keep everyone safe. It is no wonder families have trusted the team at Dr. Alsahlani’s practice for more than 40 years.

SPECIALTY: Infectious Disease EDUCATION: MD, Al-Nahrain University, Baghdad, Iraq; internship, Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, Plainfield N.J.; residency, Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, Plainfield N.J.; fellowship, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science AWARDS/HONORS: Clinical Excellence Award, Advocate Condell Medical Center (2020)
Dr. Rami Taha’s specialty in infectious diseases has never been more critical than in this moment. As a physician with Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and his own Infectious Disease Consultants of Northern Illinois practice, the Lake Forest resident has been on the frontlines of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “Because of the pandemic and constant emerging new infectious diseases, an infectious disease specialist is becoming essential to have in any community,” says Dr. Taha, who was educated in his native Baghdad and has more than 20 years of experience. “The early days of COVID were rough,” says Dr. Taha, who treated hundreds of COVID-19 patients through the first seven months of the pandemic. “We are still seeing a significant number of COVID patients. We are treating them with a combination of approved antiviral medications, steroids, and monoclonal antibodies. I believe this is making a difference and improving outcomes in some patients.” And with vaccines rolling out in record numbers, hope—and much deserved rest—is on the horizon. “We have high hopes that once a good number of people get vaccinated, this pandemic will finally be under control. I am optimistic that things will eventually get better, this year, but we should not let our guard down, we should stay vigilant, wear masks in public, and pay special attention to hand hygiene,” he concludes.
Infectious Disease Consultants of Northern Illinois is located at 1870 W. Winchester Road, Suite 247, in Libertyville. For more information, call 847-672-4940 or visit dr-rami-taha-infectious-disease.business.site.

According to Founder Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, EleVive—an acronym for ELEVate your Mindset; ThrIVE in Life—was created to help teens and parents cope with the stress of adolescence. She says stress rates are at an all-time high, with seven in 10 teens struggling with their mental health in the wake of COVID-19. “This psychological turmoil can translate into challenges with physical health, self-worth, relationships, academics, and overall emotional well-being. Fortunately, through our neurocognitive approach, coupled with traditional behavioral coaching, we help guide your teen to new levels of potential,” explains Dr. Lombardo. “At EleVive, we help teens to discover the tools they need to be successful in academics, sports, relationships, and life.” The result? Greater success now and in their adult future. “We offer highly customized one-on-one coaching for teens and parents too,” she adds. “We have found that this helps to establish greater synergy that strengthens familial relationships.” Dr. Lombardo and her team know from research that the best predictors of success in life are not academic performance or what college you attend, but rather brain-based attributes such as perseverance, discipline, personal responsibility, stress management, confidence, and optimism. “Thankfully, these are skills that can be learned, with the right training and practice,” she says. “At EleVive, we teach skills to elevate your mindset so you can thrive in life.”

Soon after starting his career in internal medicine, Dr. Chirag Patel realized how important it was to take care of those living in senior care communities, independent living communities, assisted living centers, and nursing homes. “The senior population is growing and with that comes an increased understanding of their medical care,” says Dr. Patel, explaining that today, his Hansa Medical Groupe almost exclusively cares for patients in this senior category. “Caring for a senior patient requires time and effort, not only with the patient, but also with their family while working closely with facility staff.” Dr. Patel and his team also partner with other ancillary services that help their patients, including home health, pharmacies, medical equipment companies, and hospice. “This care coordination is vital for our patients’ outcomes and has been a great strength of our medical group,” he says, adding that caring for seniors during the recent pandemic has been especially stressful for families. “I feel that our group has brought the needed comfort and ease to them while providing great medical care. That’s why our group motto and goal for each senior is ‘to treat each patient like our own family’.”
Hansa Medical Groupe is located at 5250 Old Orchard Road, Suite 300, in Skokie. For more information, call 847-920-0902.

Dr. Craig S. Kohler, a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry is an expert at saving teeth. He has been doing so in Wilmette since 1981. Every day, Dr. Kohler, who taught at NorthShore University HealthCare System for 15 years and is a visiting faculty member at the Spear Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona, sees patients with a full complement of teeth from his original dental practice. Even after moving miles away to other states, these 40-, 50-, 60-, 70- and 80-year-old patients regularly return to receive the care they’ve come to trust from Dr. Kohler. The initial one-hour exam at Kohler Dentistry is unique to the North Shore. The doctor’s radiography includes an oral radiologist CBCT evaluation when needed and he videotapes the mouth and details the best course of treatment for a long-term healthy mouth. Every restorative dental procedure is recorded using a surgical dental microscope. In addition to seeing patients at his Wilmette practice, Dr. Kohler strives to empower consumers to take better care of their mouths and has invented and patented the first LED light Multi-attachment Oral-care Toothbrush System (MOTSY). Further promoting oral health, Dr. Kohler offers his new patients the option to participate in a six-week clinical study on oral hygiene and participants receive a complimentary MOTSY Light system. SPECIALTY: Internal Medicine, Obesity Medicine, Functional Medicine EDUCATION: MD, American College of Physicians; residency, internal medicine, St. Joseph Hospital, Chicago AWARDS/HONORS/DISTINCTIONS: Frequent guest on NBC, ABC, and Fox
Dr. Meena T. Malhotra is a strong believer in the power of functional medicine—an innovative new approach to health care that goes beyond treating an illness to addressing the root causes for each individual. “Functional medicine is individualized and science-based, empowering patients and practitioners to collaborate in addressing the underlying causes of diseases,” says Dr. Malhotra, who founded Heal n Cure to do just that in 2005. “We utilize a detailed knowledge of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors to develop a personalized treatment plan for optimal outcomes.” The goal at Heal n Cure is to wean patients from costly disease management programs that often come with harmful side effects. “We target reversal rather than management of common conditions that are afflicting a growing population,” she says, noting that optimizing hormones, detoxification, and restoring gut health has had life-changing outcomes for patients that have allowed them to eliminate medications for such conditions as diabetes, hypertension, depression, and anxiety. Treatment at Heal n Cure has also helped patients overcome and manage other common health issues—from gastrointestinal and neurological to men’s health and women’s health. “We strive to rejuvenate health and vitality and restore passion and zest in the lives of our patients,” adds Dr. Malhotra.
Heal n Cure is located at 2420 Ravine Way, Suite 400, in Glenview. For more information, call 847-686-4444 or visit healncure.com.
SPECIALTY: Gastroenterology EDUCATION: Medical school, Residency, Fellowship, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center DISTINCTIONS: Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association; Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy; Senior Clinician Educator at the University of Chicago
Dr. Manoj Mehta is a board-certified gastroenterologist, serving patients with digestive diseases on the North Shore for the past 25 years. Over his career, he has seen an increase in inflammatory bowel disease, reflux, IBS, and a concerning rise in young colon cancers. The question is, how do you separate what might be a dangerous symptom from something minor? “Gastroenterologists tend to think of each problem as the basis for a procedure. And for many, once the procedure is done, so are you,” Dr. Mehta explains. “Sometimes a procedure is necessary, but a good physician will get to the heart of your symptoms and take care of you as a complete person. That means not just tests, but dialogue—and that involves your physician being a good listener.” When you need to navigate difficult and sometimes anxiety-provoking medical information, you need a physician who will work with you in a collaborative fashion. To that end, Dr. Mehta is dedicated to providing individualized, highly attentive, and detailed care. “I provide all patients with results personally. I don’t rely on nurses or office staff,” he adds. “When patients choose me to care for them, they don’t just become one of my patients. I become their doctor. They get my full attention.” Dr. Mehta built The Endoscopy Center of the North Shore as a high-quality, individualized center for excellence. It is an attractive alternative to the busy hospital setting. The Endoscopy Center has full accreditation, safety certification, and quality awards.
The Endoscopy Center of the North Shore is located at 1100 Central Avenue, Suite H, in Wilmette. For more information, call 847-256-1855, email [email protected], or visit ginorthshore.com.
SPECIALTY: General Dentistry EDUCATION: DDS, Loyola University School of Dentistry AWARDS/HONORS: Fellow, Academy of General Dentistry
At Lake Forest Dental, Dr. Steve Ballis has a mission to change lives by creating beautiful, healthy smiles. “Our motto is—‘It’s All About You!’” he says, adding, “Our business is not treating teeth, but treating people.” This has been especially important during the pandemic, when patients have been more likely to neglect small problems and avoid routine dental preventative health—often leading to more difficult and complex issues. “Without routine exams, some potentially dangerous pathologies may not be diagnosed until it’s too late, says Dr. Ballis, explaining that about 54,000 cases of oral cancer are diagnosed annually. “The stress we are all undergoing is causing people to clench and grind, resulting in more fractured teeth. Periodontal disease, if not diagnosed and treated early, will have devasting and irreversible consequences.” The office has taken all necessary precautions to provide a safe environment for its patients to be treated and stay healthy through these times of uncertainty. “I enjoy creating complete transformations for our patients,” he says, adding that there is a solution for everyone. “With the latest technology, the possibilities are endless for a beautiful and functional result. I encourage anyone who needs a consult or a second opinion to visit our office. I truly believe they will not be disappointed.”
Lake Forest Dental is located at 1025 W. Everett Road in Lake Forest. For more information, call 847-457-9200, email [email protected], or visit drballis.com.

You may not realize it but your sense of hearing has been essential in maintaining mental and emotional wellbeing through the pandemic. Whether it was a traditional telephone call or a virtual gathering via Zoom or other video platforms, staying together while apart became more important than ever. Dr. Lori A. Halvorson of Lake Forest Hearing Professionals is on a mission to help patients hear and be heard. “I treat hearing to help brains stay healthy and help people remain connected to everyone and everything they love,” she says. The statistics are clear. She says that according to a recent Lancet study, one in three cases of dementia could be prevented. “Treating hearing loss effectively is the number one thing you can modify in your life to reduce your risk for dementia. Our ears send sound to our brain. Our brain hears it and makes sense out of the sounds. We hear with our brain, not our ears,” explains Dr. Halvorson. However, treating hearing conditions is about more than buying a device. Her approach includes a comprehensive ear to brain auditory evaluation to determine both the amount of loudness loss and the amount of auditory processing loss. “Our treatment plan is personalized to make hearing easier and social interactions better,” she says. “We must treat the entire auditory system and retrain the brain so it can process and understand speech clearer.”
Lake Forest Hearing Professionals is located at 225 E. Deerpath Road, Suite 223, in Lake Forest; at 400 N. Central Avenue, Suite 100, in Northfield; and at 1731 N. Marcey Street, Suite 530, in Chicago. For more information, call 847-295-1185 or visit lakeforesthearing.com.

Establishing long-term relationships with patients is what Dr. Daniel A. Hidaka values most about his profession. “I chose internal medicine in order to be able to take care of the patient as a whole, taking ownership over all aspects of a person’s care,” he says. “I love what I do. I care deeply about each individual patient and have found a model in which I can practice at the highest level.” Dr. Hidaka also enjoys being on faculty at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he is able to pass on his skills to the next generation of medical professionals. “At Harper Health, I have found a home where we pride ourselves on being at the leading edge of modern medicine while still retaining the values of the traditional doctor patient relationship,” he explains. “The pandemic has highlighted that which remains so important in modern medical care—access, continuity of care, and relationships.” Dr. Hidaka is proud of the way he’s been able to serve his patients in the new, ongoing COVID-19 world. “I have enjoyed being there for my patients when they need me the most in this time. I am excited to be growing my practice on the North Shore, a community that has given me so much, having grown up in the area,” Dr. Hidaka adds. “I look forward to giving back in the years to come as I continue to cultivate strong, enduring relationships that will last a lifetime.”

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Michael Howard has watched the advances made in natural breast reconstruction techniques over the years and is excited to be a part of this important specialty at such a groundbreaking time. “Research shows that patients have improved outcomes and higher satisfaction with these new methods, including both implant-based and autologous, or natural, reconstruction,” explains Dr. Howard, who has served the Chicago area since 2005. Previously on the clinical faculty of the University of Chicago, Dr. Howard was recently recruited by Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital to further develop the plastic surgery division on the North Shore and the north side of Chicago. “My practice focuses specifically on breast reconstruction and I offer these cutting-edge techniques to my patients. While more complex than historical breast reconstruction methods, the results are better, and patients are the beneficiary.” Growing up in rural Kansas, he was instilled with a strong work ethic and sense of integrity. “Doing the right thing when no one is looking, became my motto from a young age. Patients will always hear the truth from me and can rest assured that I will not cut corners at any point during the course of their care,” says Dr. Howard, explaining that the experience of losing his own mother to breast cancer at a young age continues to shape how he practices today. “When I am taking care of a patient with a recent cancer diagnosis or newly discovered genetic mutation predisposing them to a high risk of cancer, I can look her in the eye, hold her hand, and assure her that, I understand.”

SPECIALTY: Internal Medicine/Concierge Medicine EDUCATION: BS, University of Illinois; MD, University of Illinois AWARDS/HONORS/DISTINCTIONS: Best Doctor, Consumers Checkbook magazine; certification, American Board of Internal Medicine (1997, recertified in 2009 and 2017); founding partner and director, Affinity Healthcare; founder and former board member, Northwest Community Healthcare Medical Group
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted health care in many ways but one undeniable truth that emerged was the benefit of concierge medicine. Dr. David S. Charman, a founding partner and a director of Affinity Healthcare who was instrumental in starting the Northwest Community Healthcare Medical Group (NCH), says his concierge practice gave patients 24/7 access to the care they needed during these unprecedented times. “Practicing as a concierge physician is beneficial in the COVID-19 environment,” says Dr. Charman, who has been in private practice as a board-certified physician for more than 25 years. “Patients are able to reach me personally—by phone, text, email, in-office, or a telemedicine visit.” With only one patient in the office at a time, no waiting room, and HEPA filters in each room, he says the office allows maximum safety. Beyond the current pandemic, his passion is the annual physical. “That’s where I believe preventive medicine begins,” Dr. Charman explains. “The exam is between one to two hours long and is exhaustive in making sure all preventive elements are discussed and carried out.” A five-point wellness plan is developed for each patient that addresses nutrition, exercise, sleep, hydration, and mindfulness. “An action plan is put in place and the patient is required to follow up in three months to make sure he or she is accountable to the plan,” he adds.

Dr. Kristi Tough DeSapri knows that women can spend one-third to half of their lives post-menopause. As a result, achieving optimal health during those years is very important. Dr. DeSapri has cultivated a consultative practice exclusively treating midlife women’s health issues. She is also Director of Northwestern Medicine’s Program for Women’s Bone Health, a new clinic that focuses on identifying women at high risk for developing osteoporosis with comprehensive screening and creation of personalized prevention strategies. As a board-certified dermatologist, who practices both medical and cosmetic dermatology, Dr. Tina C. Venetos says optimal health care is her top priority. “The focus of being healthy first sometimes is forgotten by patients,” explains Dr. Venetos, Medical Director of Northshore Dermatology Center. “When someone comes in and wants Botox or Coolsculpting, I stress that they should also have a yearly skin check. I once diagnosed someone with breast cancer who came to see me as a dermatologist. These routine skin exams are incredibly important and early detection of melanoma improves the rate of cure.” Since 1996, her practice has been providing general and cosmetic dermatology to patients throughout the North Shore. In addition to advocating for skin cancer prevention, Dr. Venetos offers a medical approach to dermatology with attention to aesthetics. “As a cutting-edge office, we are usually the first to have new technologies,” she says, noting that her practice now offers the non-invasive Emsculpt and Emsculpt NEO treatments. “A 30-minute treatment is basically like doing thousands of crunches and sit-ups, resulting in an average 30 percent decrease in fat and a 40 percent increase in muscle,” says Dr. Venetos, noting that it works just as well for the buttocks and arms as it does for the abdomen. To learn more about these innovative new procedures, including the revolutionary Emsella device, contact her team for a comprehensive consultation.

Terrasse has been motivated by the desire for positive patient results—respecting the integrity and natural beauty of every individual. Inspired by artistry and form, he is recognized locally and nationally for his leadership, experience, and expertise in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery and skin care. “I derive great satisfaction in providing my patients with improved self-esteem and confidence,” says Dr. Terrasse, whose credentials include serving as past chairman of the Department of Surgery of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, working as a Clinician of Surgery at Northwestern Medicine Health System, and being on staff at the NorthShore HealthSystem and Advocate Aurora Health hospitals. In addition to surgery, his ERASE MediSpa also offers noninvasive procedures that provide effective body contouring, skin tightening and rejuvenation, cellulite reduction, and laser hair removal utilizing the latest technologies and skin care treatments. ERASE MediSpa’s team includes licensed aesthetician, Angela Morrill, whom patients revere for her care and skill. “For many potential cosmetic surgery patients, looking at their reflections is like peeking in an amusement park mirror—what’s portrayed on the outside is not what’s felt on the inside,” he says. “I really understand when there is a mismatch or lack of harmony between the psyche and the actual physical characteristics. Being able to correct problem areas and give patients one less thing to worry about is very rewarding. I also understand the effect of body image on self-esteem, and I treat it seriously by designing patient refinements with the whole individual in mind.”

A decade later, Dr. Woloson founded Northwest Vascular and Vein Specialists—a boutique practice devoted exclusively to venous disease. “Providing superior care to my patients has always been my priority,” says Dr. Woloson, who was one of the first vascular surgeons performing minimally invasive vein ablations nearly 20 years ago. Her experience puts her among the pioneers in the field as she is considered one of the best vein doctors in the Chicago area with a practice that embraces the latest technologies as they develop. “We provide the most up-to-date options from the treatment of cosmetic spider veins to the most complex vein issues,” she adds. “I will always make sure my patients feel comfortable and that they leave with a clear understanding of their treatment options.” A member of the American College of Phlebology who regularly attends meetings focusing on venous disease, Dr. Woloson prides herself on educating her patients, taking the time that they need during appointments, and respecting their time by staying on schedule. “I respond to my patient’s phone calls quickly and call them with their results on the day of their exam.” All of these things combined have made her a practitioner to be respected and admired.

The pandemic has changed many things about our lives, but one change that Dr. Sara Dickie is keenly aware of is how it illuminated the way we perceive ourselves. “Unfortunately, a lot of people do not love what they see in their Zoom reflection,” says Dr. Dickie, medical director of One Magnificent Medspa in Wilmette. “The last year has provided me a wonderful opportunity to educate people about what can be done to improve skin quality, enhance one’s natural beauty, and reduce the signs of aging in subtle, natural ways that won’t drastically change the way they look. It also offers me the chance to disavow many common misconceptions of plastic surgery to people who had never considered it.” Experience has taught her that while plastic surgery can offer a pantheon of options, clients need guidance. The first step is determining how they want to look, but part of the process is helping them to recognize the natural beauty that lies within. “Plastic surgery can change shape, size, and curves, but again, it is important to help clients understand what is possible for their body,” she explains. “The most important thing to me is to help people develop realistic goals and understand what it will take to get there.” Dr. Dickie also helps patients achieve maximum skin health to prevent skin cancers, promote a healthy appearance, and prevent or reverse the signs of aging.

Dr. Mary S. Maish says it’s never been a more important time to work in her chosen field of treating diseases of the lung and esophagus. “I trained at the best place in the world for my specialty—MD Anderson for thoracic surgery and University of Southern California for esophageal surgery—and then published my work and presented at national and international meetings,” says Dr. Maish, one of the few women doctors in her specialty. For those who don’t understand the scope of thoracic surgery, the simplest way to explain is that Dr. Maish is an expert at treating diseases of the chest cavity, mostly on the lungs and the esophagus. “Right now, lung cancer is the number one cancer killer, with over 150,000 cases each year in the U.S. alone,” she explains. “Surgery on the lung is the treatment for most forms of lung cancer, sometimes in conjunction with chemo and radiation therapy. But there have been great advances in the surgical field of thoracic surgery. While these types of technologies were once only offered in large university settings, I am excited to announce that Northwestern’s Lake Forest Hospital offers robotic thoracic surgery.” With this cutting-edge technology, patients are able to leave the hospital sooner and return to work and their regular lives much sooner, something Dr. Maish takes great pride in.

Reputations are built over time, with effort, creativity—and ultimately—results. When Dr. Peter Geldner began his practice, most of his work dealt with complex reconstructive surgeries. “The questions were always how to formulate a unique solution for each patient based on their needs, desires, and limitations, available tissues, and a creative use of surgical options,” he says. “My cosmetic practice rapidly grew in an organic fashion. Patients sought me out since I didn’t apply a cookie cutter approach, instead treating each patient in a holistic fashion.” Dr. Geldner constantly evaluates his own outcomes to refine his patients’ options with surgical as well as nonsurgical treatments. New devices and techniques may represent substantial advancements in the art and science of plastic surgery; conversely, without close review, they may simply represent hype. “Only critical evaluation allows us to choose which new devices and techniques work and which do not. Consultations focus on a candid discussion of the patient’s desires, health, options, and individualized risks,” says Dr. Geldner. “We jointly create a plan for success. Intraoperative and postoperative care is vitally important. Experience and critical thought have taught me not to dismiss patient concerns. I realize that for each patient, the subjective outcome of our care far exceeds an objective evaluation of the results.” That’s why he continues to surround himself with nurses and estheticians who share his vision. “What we do for our patients has tremendous importance in their lives,” he adds. “We offer the options to look better, feel better, and live better.”

SPECIALTY: Peri-Neural Injection Therapy and Prolotherapy EDUCATION: MD, University College Dublin, Ireland DISTINCTIONS: Founder of Vein Clinics of America; board certified, ABFP
Dr. Brian McDonagh, founder of Vein Clinics of America, is excited about his work in peri-neural injection therapy (PIT). “It can cure disorders that are otherwise incurable, revolutionizing the treatment of neurology,” explains Dr. McDonagh. Among the conditions and neuropathies being successfully treated with this therapy are Migraine and Trigeminal neuralgia, diabetic foot pain, and such nerve entrapment syndromes as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Bell’s palsy. “Most of these are rapid responders to treatment, because the involved nerves have low sugar levels,” he says. “There are many other conditions that can benefit from the treatment of the nerve supply.” Among those conditions are Dry eye, Rotator Cuff injuries, Dropped Foot, Pitcher’s arm, Tennis elbow, Fibromyalgia, CRPS, Lyme disease pain, wrist and hand injuries, as well as a host of abdominal disorders, such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), Crohn’s and Ulcerative colitis, bladder urgency, and groin muscle injuries. “Multiple sclerosis (MS) has been a good responder with symptoms disappearing in a small pilot study I’ve conducted over the past four years,” he says. Dr. McDonagh plans to expand that study because of its success in turning off the autoimmune activity, allowing the myelin sheath to heal. He explains, “These MS patients have been asymptomatic for over a year without further treatment. No down time or recovery time is required for these treatments.”

With substantial experience in advanced arthroscopic shoulder and knee ligament reconstructive techniques, rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement, and cartilage restoration, he has a reputation for not only expertise, but compassion and the highest level of care. “Surgery is not always the best answer. Many ailments can be resolved with conservative non-surgical treatment,” explains Dr. Goldstein, who is an associate master instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America and presents on advanced arthroscopic video techniques at national meetings. “However, if surgery is necessary, my goal is your goal—improved function, less pain and a better quality of life.” Dr. Goldstein prides himself on having the highest standards of respect and ethics for his patients. “I prefer to do procedures such as arthroscopic rotator cuff repair of the shoulder, meniscal treatment, and ACL reconstruction of the knee on an outpatient basis,” he says. “This minimizes post-operative pain, increases the potential for rehabilitation, and can lead to a quicker recovery.” A former national junior tennis player, Dr. Goldstein enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, and still enjoys getting out on the court.

For Dr. Carmen Woods Hollowell, medicine is part of the fabric of who she is. “I am of the belief that to whom much is given, much is required,” says Dr. Woods Hollowell. “My philosophy of compassionate medicine rooted in cutting-edge science began at a young age. As a child, I saw the deep personal satisfaction my father derived from our profession.” Though now emeritus, he started the practice on the North Shore more than 40 years ago—pioneering a philosophy of treating people the way he’d want to be treated. “Medicine is in my DNA. My husband’s a surgeon … my sister and in-laws are all physicians. It’s against this backdrop I shine,” she says. “By embracing and empowering every stage of womanhood, I’m able to break down the barriers between doctor and patient, placing me far above the rest. It’s a pleasure to attend a birthday party every day and get to know my patients and families through generations.” To Dr. Woods Hollowell, her practice is all about relationships and being present. “Every moment with me is like hanging out with your best friend; just at my office,” she adds. “I’ve delivered, operated on, tended, and cared for the generations my father delivered. It’s not business with us at The Woods Women’s Group; it’s personal.”

The foundation of Dr. John Q. Cook’s approach to plastic surgery and aesthetics is a passionate commitment to naturalism. For both surgical and aesthetic treatments, his goal is to create a result that looks like it belongs to the patient’s natural structure. “I love making people feel better about themselves. When we make a person look better, this enhances their self-image, and they take better care of themselves,” he says, explaining that his purpose is to be a trusted advisor to his patients. “In this way, plastic surgery and aesthetic treatments can be a gateway to better health and wellbeing, especially if we provide gentle encouragement along the way. As someone who is deeply interested in aesthetics, I want to find a way to help each person achieve their very best form, always in a way that respects each person’s natural structure.” With an advanced portfolio of techniques and cutting-edge knowledge, Dr. Cook has extensive educational credentials and recognition in the industry. He and his team at the Whole Beauty® Institute in Chicago and Winnetka offer a continuum of surgical and medical aesthetic treatments individualized to each patient’s needs. “The plastic surgery and aesthetic treatments that we provide our patients are always, and have always been, prioritized by safety, health, and outcome of care—even more so now with the stresses of the past nine months.”
