There is something about the arrival of spring that makes people want to reset. We clean out closets, refresh our wardrobes and start spending more time outside. But for many people, the things that matter most—our family, our finances and our future—can get pushed to the back burner.
This spring, consider adding one more item to your list: taking a closer look at where you stand legally.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. And it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. For most people, it simply means pausing to ask a few important questions and then acting on the answers.
Are Your Custody Arrangements Still Working?
If you are a parent navigating a custody agreement, chances are your child’s life has changed since that agreement was put in place. They may have switched schools, moved to a new activity, or simply grown in ways that shift the dynamic at home. Spring is a natural time to sit down, either on your own or with a family law attorney and ask whether your current arrangement still reflects what is best for your kids. A small adjustment now can prevent bigger challenges down the road.
Have You Had the Prenup Conversation?
Spring and early summer is peak wedding season, especially here in the Chicago area. If you are engaged, the prenuptial agreement conversation might feel awkward, but it doesn’t have to be. A prenup is not a sign that a marriage is doomed, it is a sign that two people are being thoughtful and responsible about their future together. Think of it as one of the best gifts you can give each other before you say, “I do.” Do You Understand How
Property Division Actually Works?
For anyone considering a divorce, one of the biggest sources of anxiety is the question of assets. What happens to the house? The savings? A business? The truth is that most people have a lot more clarity available to them than they realize. Understanding how Illinois handles property division and working with an attorney who can walk you through it, takes a lot of the fear out of the process. Knowledge is genuinely empowering here.

At Merel Family Law, my colleagues and I are here to help you move forward with confidence, no matter where you are in the process. I founded this firm because I believe that getting the right legal guidance should feel approachable, not intimidating.
