Growing up in a family of lawyers, Margaret P. Battersby Black had a strong sense of justice and fairness from a very young age. “As early as I can remember, I advocated for myself and others,” says Black, an award-winning trial attorney who has played a key role in a number of nursing home and medical malpractice cases at Levin & Perconti. “Seeing the work that my father did helping injured victims inspired me to take his pathway when it came time to narrow down the field.” Today, she specializes in a variety of personal injury cases— from medical malpractice and birth injury to nursing home abuse and neglect, wrongful death, and physical and sexual abuse. “As a woman, I have compassion and empathy for the sad times my clients find themselves in when they come to me. I am able to hear their stories and their perspectives and understand the human aspect of their suffering in addition to the legal nuances of their case,” says Black, who received the 2023 Carole K. Bellows Women of Influence award, which honors those who are advocates for action addressing women’s issues and promote involvement by women in the legal community at all levels. She says that being a mother only fueled her desire to help other women and children who are less fortunate or have become victims of medical negligence. “It makes me proud to be able to tell my children that I helped a child who was disabled,” she adds, explaining that her life mission is to bring justice to victims and families who truly deserve it. “They have hit the lowest point in their lives when they come to me and giving them a voice and making sure that justice is done is the best part of my job.”
