AGI CORONA SEMRAD, founder of The Balance Project, embodies the belief that everyone has the power to make a difference. The Balance Project is a Highland Park-based nonprofit dedicated to providing mental and emotional wellness support. Semrad’s passion for helping others was instilled in her from a young age, growing up in a Chicago household that valued strong beliefs and community involvement. Reflecting on her upbringing, Semrad recalls, “I grew up in a household that required each member to do their share. We didn’t call it charity. We were doing our part.” A native of Chicago, Semrad attended DePaul University before spending the first six years of her career as an educator. However, her true calling led her to earn a master’s degree in counseling. Today, she balances her time between her work as a trauma-informed therapist and her leadership role at The Balance Project. Semrad is deeply committed to making mental health care accessible and de-stigmatized for all. She is also a proud mother of two daughters, whom she is raising to be strong and compassionate women.

Most rewarding part of what you do? I take great pride in the community we have built over the years—from the individuals we’ve helped to the incredible volunteers and providers we work with. Seeing changes in someone’s life as a result of our support is profoundly powerful.

How should women support other women? I’m constantly looking to give mentorship opportunities for those wanting to get involved. When I see someone doing something remarkable, I make sure to pull them into my network and amplify their efforts.

How do you inspire others? To inspire others, you need to rise up yourself and then ask others to rise with you. By showing your commitment and passion, you lead by example.
