For nearly 20 years, SuzAnn Kletzien Design (SKD) has elevated homes in Chicago and beyond. Founded in 2008, Owner and Principal SuzAnn Kletzien has brought her distinct flair, memorable use of color, and keen attention to detail to every new project. Kletzien’s passion for design grew in Newport Beach, where she launched her career remodeling residential and commercial spaces. The urban landscape of Chicago then drew her to the Midwest, where she worked as a design consultant for a high-end furniture showroom and designed kitchen and baths for luxury apartments before deciding to branch out on her own to launch SuzAnn Kletzien Design. SKD Offers a bold sensibility and defined personality to each and every home that results in livable luxury.
What’s one of the most memorable projects you’ve worked on, and what made it stand out for you and your client?
The most memorable project I’ve worked on was a historic Logan Boulevard three-flat that I converted into a single-family home. After several space plan revisions, I turned the structural elements over to an architect but was given creative freedom by the homeowner to take full reigns on the interiors. It was one of the first projects of this scale since launching SKD and it taught me how to deliver a beautiful home that exceeded client expectations, while staying within a set budget. To date, the home has since been featured in two magazines and is part of the Historic Logan Square Boulevard Architect’s walk.
How do you maintain consistency and quality across different projects, while still ensuring that each project feels unique?
As a rule, I never repeat my own designs, yet there is a consistent thread that reflects the true SKD feel and aesthetic in every project. I listen to each client’s needs and style preferences, while leaving room to create something bespoke to them that pushes them just past their comfort zone.
What’s your process for selecting materials or finishes (e.g., tile, flooring, window treatments) for a luxury project?
I typically start with one design element—e.g. wallpaper, a rug, or tile to serve as inspiration. I use this as a focal point in the design and present these initial schematics to my client, which is generally well-received and leads the direction. This process offers the client options without feeling overwhelmed, and helps them feel involved, like the end result is personal to them and their needs.
