If Megan Mawicke looks familiar, that’s because you’ve probably seen her before … If not around the North Shore, then definitely on your TV screen. As one of the longest- tenured female sports anchors in Chicago, Mawicke has covered all of the city’s premier sporting events over the last two decades with CBS 2 Chicago. Including a Cubs and a White Sox World Series, a Bears Super Bowl, three Blackhawks Stanley Cup championships, and Bulls Eastern Conference Finals. If you can name it, she has most likely covered it.
Now, after an impressive 22-year career in broadcast journalism that earned her three Emmy awards, Mawicke has left the sports world to embark on a new journey with her brother, John, in the Mawicke Group—a top-producing real estate team with @properties. Together Mawicke and her brother are carrying on the legacy of their mother, Barbara, who was an icon in North Shore real estate for nearly 45 years before she passed away in March. We recently caught up with Mawicke to learn more about her recent career change.
How did you decide to venture into real estate?
My family has deep roots in the local real estate industry. My mother was the top-selling agent in Kenilworth almost every year for the past three decades, and she was the first North Shore real estate agent to achieve $1 billion in career sales volume. She was such an inspiration to me. A brilliant mind, a kind heart, and endless energy while balancing four kids and building a legendary career.
I have had my real estate license for nearly 20 years and always knew that I wanted to join my mom and brother. It was time for a change and we planned this next chapter together. My mom was so supportive and excited, it’s now time to make her proud.
What can home buyers and sellers expect when they work with the Mawicke Group?
As our mother taught us, real estate is about people first. John and I learned the highest standards from our mother and that means we always strive to deliver an unparalleled level of professionalism, integrity, and service, whether we are working with first-time buyers and sellers or experienced ones. We grew up in Kenilworth and are passionate about the entire North Shore. We’re very involved in the community, so our clients know they can rely on us for intimate knowledge of local markets and neighborhoods. John and I complement each other very well, so our clients will gain the advantage of his extensive financial background along with my ability to connect with people.
In real estate, how will you draw upon your career in journalism?
I have been telling stories my entire TV career … and every home has a story. I built a journalism career based upon communication and trust, and these are paramount to success in real estate.
What is your favorite Chicago sports memory?
Too many to single out, but the Cubs’ historic World Series run in 2016 was something I wasn’t certain I would ever cover. The locker room celebration was certainly one of a kind. However, what I always loved most was telling the stories of inspirational athletes.
