Karen V. Paige describes her relationship with law partner (and office next-door neighbor at Beermann LLP’s North Shore office) Candace L. Meyers as ‘yin and yang.’ “We are great thought partners, each with different but incredibly compatible personalities and approaches,” explains Paige. Both specializing in all aspects of family and divorce law, Paige says her first step with a new client is to listen. “Then we talk about different process options—litigation, mediation, collaborative law, or out of court settlement conferences.” Meyers says her approach varies, depending on what the client is trying to accomplish and where they are in life. “If the client is a successful executive, I try to draw on their experience in shaping my advice,” explains Meyers, who participated in the mediation training at the Northwestern University. “If a client is a parent who feels marginalized, I counsel them on building their confidence as their fierce advocate.” This power team ensures clients know that their concerns are valid by offering solutions and building an effective strategy. “Because we litigate, mediate, and use the collaborative approach, our clients understand likely outcomes, prepare for them, and we achieve the best outcome given their unique circumstances,” says Paige, adding that her personal experience navigating divorce and coparenting has enhanced her empathy for clients. “We use each other’s strengths to reach thoughtful, creative, and successful arguments and resolutions,” adds Meyers. “Our point/counter-point approach results in great outcomes for our clients.”
