JEFFREY J. KROLL, a partner in the Chicago-based plaintiff personal injury firm of Kaveny + Kroll, is an award-winning attorney who has represented injured victims of negligence throughout the country for nearly three decades in the areas of trucking accidents, products liability, and medical malpractice. Having secured more than $570 million in verdicts and settlements in his 35-year legal career, Kroll has had the distinction of being repeatedly chosen over the last 15 years as one of the Best Lawyers in America and one of the top Trial Lawyers in Illinois.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO?
On a daily basis, I am helping some individual or a family that has gone through a terrible, life changing event. They are often in a very dark place. It is nice to be the one that can eventually shed some “light” on their unfortunate, and often, sad situation.
WHAT DEFINING MOMENT OR CHALLENGE HAS SHAPED YOUR JOURNEY?
I have been fortunate enough to have tried over 100 Jury Trials. Some large; some small but all are equally important to that individual or family. Having been a part of the largest compensatory verdict in Illinois history ($148 million), it reinforced my belief that I can do “good” for my clients.
HOW DO YOU STRIVE TO MAKE A LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR INDUSTRY OR COMMUNITY?
While I do not profess to be an avid camper, I am a believer in the ethics of camping—always leave your campsite better than you found it. Similarly, I am trying to leave this noble profession in a better place than when I came in. I have been fortunate to speak around the country more than 180 times on various topics and have published on over 150 occasions. It is my way of giving back. I have also taught at Northwestern and DePaul law schools. I also enjoy being around fellow lawyers. I know that could be heresy to some but I generally like attorneys—especially the ones that care about our system of justice.
