As our tiny aircraft descends over the vibrant turquoise of the Caribbean and rugged coastline, a group of young scantily clad female travelers seated nearly in the cockpit squeal with delight. This will be no ordinary landing. Thankfully, I’ve been forewarned that we are approaching one of the shortest runways in the world. Suddenly, the narrow strip of tarmac appears as my sweaty palms clench the armrests even tighter, while the pilot skillfully navigates the landing right before the runway ends at the water’s edge. “I’m so proud of you!” exclaims one of the girls to our pilot. I let out such a heavy sigh of relief that this unusual compliment barely registers with me, and I feel pride in making the decision to skip the ferry from St. Martin in lieu of experiencing this 10-minute adventure.
As we wind through the steep, verdant hills on our journey to Le Carl Gustaf, our French chauffeur regales us with tales of the hotel’s illustrious reputation for offering the best sunsets on the island and its enviable location just steps to the chic town of Gustavia. The fivestar hilltop hotel offers panoramic views of the marina, making it the pinnacle of luxury in St. Barth. Pulling up to the property feels like stepping into a postcard, with a grand staircase greeting us like a welcoming committee. It’s a mahogany masterpiece of modern and traditional Caribbean architectural design, with lush tropical foliage adorning the landing. On the ascent, we catch glimpses of the glistening harbor dotted with bobbing yachts. The air is laced with the intoxicating scent of frangipani, mingling with an aura of casual opulence that makes even the most seasoned traveler feel like royalty. Laurie, our hostess extraordinaire, greets us warmly and personally, setting the stage for the high-touch service that awaits us. Perched at a cozy high-top overlooking the marina, we’re handed two glasses of crisp Veuve, a gesture that feels like a luxurious hug after our adrenaline-fueled arrival.
This hotel, once the playground of 1980s glitterati, has been revamped and reimagined by the trendy Le Barriere Group, transforming it into a haven of French Colonial charm with a dash of Caribbean flair. Gilles & Boissier, the design wizards behind this makeover, have sprinkled their magic dust over the hotel’s 21 rooms ranging from bungalows, suites, and villas to a beautiful private home. The hotel also features the Diane Barrière Spa, Beefbar, and Shellona, a lively, upmarket restaurant on St. Barth’s iconic Shell Beach.
With spirits lifted, we eagerly anticipate further adventures as Laurie guides us to our bungalow, Saint Jean 310. Its creamy tones, rich wood, and smooth stone blend seamlessly with vibrant lime greens and sunny yellows framing the crimson clay rooftops against the sapphire harbor backdrop. A chilled bottle of Charles Heidsieck, accompanied by decadent chocolate treats, awaits us on the coffee table, along with a heartfelt welcome note. We look forward to watching the sunset from our plunge pool on the spacious private terrace, surrounded by palms and tropical flora. With amenities like an outdoor shower and yellow and white striped loungers, we’re tempted to never leave. The bold green floral headboard overlooks a pillow paradise of seven different types, while the luxuriously appointed state-of-the art marble bathroom boasts a celestial rainfall shower. And let’s not forget the scrupulously curated minibar stocked with top-shelf beverages like Clase Azul tequila, Michel Cluizel chocolates, and a Nespresso machine.
Our escapade continues with lunch reservations at one of the island’s hottest spots, Shellona. The electrifying pulse of DJ beats envelops us as we approach this Mediterranean chic meets Caribbean charm beachfront haven. We are greeted with smiles and French accents and informed our sunbeds are on reserve whenever we are ready. Perhaps a signature cocktail like the kiwi infused Kiminth while embarking on a tantalizing journey into Shellona’s menu? The Feta Au Filo Sesame Noir Et Miel is served. Imagine a delicate parcel of golden filo pastry, carefully wrapped around a creamy center of tangy feta cheese, drizzled with golden honey. As we take our first bite, the crisp exterior gives way to a velvety interior, where the richness of the cheese mingles with the flakiness of the pastry. Our waiter suggests the Tacos Croustillant. We choose the mahi and tuna golden-brown taco shells, fried to crispy perfection. The Carpaccio de Poisson St. Barth Style Zesty citrus marinade adds a burst of freshness, while hints of tropical fruits and fragrant herbs dance on our palate. Our meal would not have been complete without Shellona’s giant orb signature dessert, Bougatsa!
At Spa Diane Barrière, the thrill is not just in the indulgence but in the transformative experience it offers. I know from the moment I entered for my Biologique Recherche facial that I am about to embark on a journey of rejuvenation and relaxation unlike any other. The Le Carl Gustaf high-touch personalization does not miss a beat as the therapist uses an instrument to analyze my skin’s hydration, elasticity, and oil production. She utilizes this data to tailor my facial treatment and recommended a mask to restore my skin barrier and enhance firmness around my eyes. When I am roused from my facial reverie, she excitedly holds up a mirror. I imagine my reaction won’t compare to hers, but to my surprise, I can see the transformation! Never have I witnessed such immediate results from a facial treatment. The Spa also offers body treatments and a plethora of massages such as pregnancy couples along with a fitness and yoga center.

From the fiery kick of the spicy rock corn to the ethereal lightness of the Bao Bun, each bite is a symphony of flavors. Then, as we ascend to greater culinary heights, we indulge in the luxurious Wagyu filet paired with velvety black truffle mashed potatoes. The expertly curated wine list and craft cocktails enhance the dining experience, making Beefbar a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts seeking the epitome of luxury and flavor in St. Barth.
Returning to our room that evening, we’re greeted by yet another personal note from our newfound friend Laurie. “Before you leave St. Barth,” she says, “I suggest you swim with the turtles in the lagoon, spend time at Colombier beach, and take a walk to the natural pools of Grand Fond.” In parentheses, she cheekily adds, “but keep in mind that we are the best.” We wholeheartedly agree. Le Carl Gustaf has exceeded all expectations, leaving us exhilarated and yearning for more thrilling escapades.
