After graduating from the University of Alabama, Laura Kaufmann began her creative career in kitchen and bath design more than 20 years ago. Before starting her own firm, Kaufmann spent 15 years learning the nuances of renovation, while focusing on custom cabinetry on the North Shore. In 2018, Laura launched her own design firm, LBK Design Group, specializing in kitchen design. Kaufmann’s LBK Design Studio in downtown Lake Forest opened its doors in 2022, welcoming clients looking for classic style design with modern touches.
How do you begin the design process?
I love having my initial meeting at my client’s home. They can tell me what works, or more importantly what doesn’t work, and I can see how they want to evolve in terms of style and function. This is the time for us to go through their social media saves, inspirations, and for them to give me their ultimate wish list for the areas we are focusing on.
What sets you apart from your competition?
My true love of kitchen and bath design. When I walk into an initial appointment at a client’s home, I can envision how the new space will look by the time I leave. I feel that my approachability sets me apart from my competition.
Design trends you are most excited about in 2023?
More organic, earthy colors for cabinetry. When used in the right setting, those become timeless. I’d love to see people use more natural stone as well.
Areas one should invest in?
Cabinets are the bones of your kitchen, and you want these to last as long as you are in your home. Also invest in the right contractor—this will make all the difference in the world.
