Glimpse Into The Future

Decisions about the best eyewear are personal, both from a medical and a fashion standpoint. They affect how you see, and how others see you. This conundrum is not lost on Dr. Carrie Roitstein and Dory Kenna, who run the Hinsdale location of EFP Opticians, which is currently evolving into its new name, Glimpse Vision.
“I love our business model. We are a small, independent store, a boutique,” Kenna says. “Our motto is anything goes—very personalized—with frame lines that are completely customizable. We’ll come in before and after hours to accommodate clients.”
Kenna and Dr. Roitstein work with a small number of independent designers who make all their frames by hand. They’ve built strong relationships with vendors, and that carries over to their service to clients. The name change to Glimpse Vision is meant to reflect the growth of the business as well as to have a name that clients can better remember when referring friends and family.
While the business takes great care in offering personalized service when it comes to fashion and frames, the same can be said for the top-level medical care it offers clients—with a focus as much on personal health as good vision.
“I have tailored our eye exams to be more integrated and wellness-focused, from the inside out,” Dr. Roitstein says. “Our comprehensive exam covers diet, medication, health conditions, and vision demands, including how long a client spends looking at a computer on any given day. Technology offers a lot of treatments we can start with, such as specialty contact lenses for difficult shaped corneas.”
Dr. Roitstein adds that Glimpse partners with independent contact lens companies that provide cutting-edge solutions for conditions like dry eye and myopia. She notes, in particular, technology that can help slow down nearsightedness in children.
For Kenna and Dr. Roitstein, optics is very personal. Kenna loves providing relationship-based eye care often lost in today’s eyeglass shopping environment. Dr. Roitstein caught the eye doctor bug at a young age—when she was just 2 1/2—and had an eye condition that required surgery.
“I’ve always loved the combination of fashion and healthy vision,” she says. “I fell in love with it and just stuck with it. It’s such a great opportunity getting our patients to see their best as well as look their best.”
In a time when just about every type of business is migrating to the online marketplace, Dr. Roitstein points out that when it comes to eye care, nothing can replace the real deal.
“You really need to have an expert optician determine the best frame fit, lens material, and lens quality. We encounter a lot of online glass purchases that we have to remake,” says Roitstein. “It’s especially important with higher prescriptions to have a more professional fit. Just because a frame looks good on your neighbor doesn’t mean it will work for you.”
