From the Outside In

In the spring, we often make resolutions focused on how to tone our bodies, often setting goals for the summer swimsuit bodies. But it is also a good time for us to think about our skin. Our skin not only protects us from the sun’s harmful UV rays, but it also serves as a window to our overall health.
“Skin health is an essential component to one’s overall well-being, says Dr. Toula Berti of Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery. Both Dr. Jeffrey and Dr. Toula Berti manage, treat, and diagnose any issues or concerns related to skin, hair, and nails for the entire family at their dermatology practices. Their expertise encompasses diagnosing and treating more serious conditions such as skin cancer to performing various elective cosmetic procedures such as Botox, fillers, laser treatments, and body contouring.
Spring is a time of renewal and a great time to pay closer attention to our skin and its appearance.
“During the cold Chicago winters, many people are not even paying close attention to their skin and may not notice new moles or growths,” says Dr. Toula Berti. A complete skin exam is a great start to achieving healthy and wonderful looking skin. “Occasionally, there may be hesitation about getting a complete skin exam; some people may feel either it is unnecessary or embarrassing. But it’s the first step in developing a smart and healthy skin care regimen,” states Dr. Jeffrey Berti. At Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery, patients find that the exam is both professional as well as informative.
“Answering and addressing various skin care concerns and myths is part of our patient encounter,” he adds.
When asked about current trends in skin care, Dr. Jeffrey Berti responded, “the biggest shift in recent years in terms of dermatological procedures has been the move to non-invasive practices that come with low risks and high benefits. Our practice came of age when the Baby Boomers came of age, and they’ve been the fuel behind cosmetic trends.”
They are the first generation that started using injectables, and they began seeing results early on. Now, some of those procedures have become household names, such as Botox and Restylane, for example. These treatments respectively relax muscles and fill in facial wrinkles to help patients look like themselves, only younger.
Noninvasive facial rejuvenation procedures for smoothing skin’s texture and improving the tone have proven their effectiveness and have become go-to treatments. However, now nonsurgical treatments for contouring the entire body like CoolSculpting are becoming the next popular procedure. Many people are looking to tone problem areas and do not want the risks or downtime associated with surgical procedures.
Dr. Berti adds, “Body contouring treatments are better than they were even just a few years ago, and they’re producing more predictable results with little to no downtime.” When the weather starts warming up, the layers of outerwear will shed and if the work-outs and diets are not providing the results, Drs. Berti at Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery may have the answers that you are looking for.
