Estate Gardener

After working for a private landscape company, Scott Byron formed his own firm in 1983 to design, install, and maintain unique residential gardens in the Chicago area. His company has seen decades of remarkable success in landscape design and architecture planning, construction, and maintenance. The company now employs 275 people, and while most of the work is residential, the firm has also garnered recognition for building public gardens, most notably the English Walled Garden and the Grunsfeld Children’s Growing Garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Scott Byron landscapes are beautiful yet functional, complex yet inviting. The company’s style is distinctive, and in the real estate community, there is strong demand for homes with a Scott Byron landscape. “We design spaces into separate and distinct outdoor living areas that have different uses for each,” says Byron, who now spends most of his time meeting with clients to work on new projects. He and his design teams create interesting, layered, multifunctional outdoor spaces. Some clients prefer a formal style, while others are open to more creative spaces. Byron, who has a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Illinois, still spends considerable time on job sites to ensure projects go according to plan. Those projects are becoming more intricate and multifaceted every year. There’s a high demand for fully equipped outdoor kitchens, and a lot of the work comes in the overall design to make sure landscape elements are cohesive. “We integrate elements like multi-tiered terraces, plantings and pergolas to separate spaces while adding beauty to the surroundings,” Byron says. More clients are showing interest in sustainable landscape design now, too. “Some of these designs require conservation through water management, planting drought-tolerant trees and perennials, and using passive solar landscape designs that maximize sun exposure in the winter and shade in the summer,” Byron says. “We have also been designing more green roofs for energy conservation, and setting aside more space for vegetative gardens.” You can see Scott Byron work at Chicago’s lakefront estates, small country homes and on rooftops in the city. “Each project is different, and presents a unique set of challenges,” Byron says. But judging by the company’s continued growth and stellar client reviews, Scott Byron not only meets, but exceeds expectations.
