Elements of Style

If you want a modern approach to interior design, Katharine Andrews encourages you to look to the past. “I love learning about the history of interior design and architecture, because I enjoy knowing where certain design elements originated from,” says Andrews, principal interior designer at Katharine Andrews Interiors, LLC. “I believe that classical architecture is at the foundation of all great design.”Andrews, whose love of designing began as a young girl growing up in two vintage homes, launched her career in sales and marketing prior to pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming an interior designer. Andrews worked closely with her mother and father to renovate the vintage homes and her passion for design grew ever since. “We chose to live in both dwellings during all stages of construction, where I gained first hand exposure to the trades, learned the underpinnings of architectural design, and procurement of materials and finishes as we rebuilt our homes,” says Andrews. While consistently being exposed to a variety of style genres, she finds new inspiration with every potential client with the belief that homes are a direct reflection of the clients’ personalities. Yet interiors should be comfortable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. “My firm caters to all individual tastes and lifestyles,” says Andrews. Her inspiration also stems from her belief that interiors should tell a story. She believes a home should be filled with memories and personal possessions. “I’m inspired when I walk into a client’s home and they share their design challenges with me. I can already see potential opportunities that could transform the space,” says Andrews. “I enjoy finding new ways a space can be utilized more efficiently which in turn improves the client’s quality of life.” While Andrews believes that interior design is an evolving process, she enjoys working with clients closely to help them realize their design aspirations. For Andrews, the end results are worth the extra effort she puts in. “It’s gratifying to see my design ideas develop and come to fruition,” says Andrews. “I feel fulfilled when my designs bring joy and happiness to my clients.”
