Dr. Lori Halvorson has established a reputation in the Chicago area for her proven work in hearing health. Known for practicing with purpose, her work as a certified audiologist helps patients improve sound to brain connection so the brain can process speech sounds easier. Reduced listening effort can reduce their risk for dementia, and, ultimately, they can enjoy engagement with family and friends. “Recent research from Johns Hopkins revealed that treating hearing loss early and effectively can reduce cognitive decline by 50 percent,” she says. Dr. Halvorson has developed preventive hearing health care, opening DUET in Lake Forest, the first hearing preservation clinic in the world, a few months ago. The Duet Method includes preventive care exams of the hearing cells, comprehensive ear-to-brain strength training, and a breakthrough in hearing nutrition. For the past three years, she and her team conducted a first-of-its-kind clinical study on a nutraceutical, patented by the University of Michigan, to help stabilize and preserve hearing, finding that the right sound ingredients at a specific volume can help preserve hearing cells, while too many sound ingredients at high volume can kill them. “We are born with 16,000 hearing cells in each ear and, biologically, they are designed to last our lifetime,” she says. “Hearing cells die from metabolic stress related to things like noise exposure, ototoxic medications, and change in blood flow. My passion is to preserve hearing cells, so they do last our lifetime. Our team at DUET Hearing Preservation is on a mission to provide preventive hearing health care to every ear of every age.”
She believes that every ear, every age, everywhere needs to hear. She has traveled the world, helping children in orphanages, refugee camps, and hospitals in West Bank, Jordan, Jamaica, and Tanzania, and supplying hearing aids donated by her patients.
