Country Vs. Town

ANN LOCKHART grew up in a big, close-knit family in a small town in northeast Iowa. After studying at the University of Northern Iowa and abroad in France, Lockhart began her career in IT, eventually landing an e-commerce product manager position at FTD (aka the flower company). Lockhart and her husband of 10 years, Jonathan, decided to make Hinsdale their home after a serendipitous recommendation to visit Razny Jewelers in downtown Hinsdale. “Being from a small town, the size of downtown Hinsdale just felt like home,” says Lockhart. As we celebrate Mother’s Day this month, this local mother of two—Audrey (5) and Jack (3)—shares some of her favorites in the country and on the town.

Mantra? Own your destiny. Best grooming tip? Always wear sunscreen. Guilty pleasure? Blowouts, Bravo TV, and shoes. Favorite foods? Donuts, popcorn, and nachos—I’m definitely not the healthiest eater. Music you love? I seem to always have Train, Pink, and Maroon 5 on every playlist. Best advice ever given to you? Mirror what you admire and give what you expect. Best advice you’ve given? Always assume positive intent. Earliest memory? My grandpa (Papa Joe) giving me Brach’s chocolate maple filled candy. When you wake up, you? I’m not a morning person, so typically my first thought is that I wish I could go back to sleep, but then reality settles in and I take our dogs outside and then wake up my kids with some cuddles. Before bed, you? Check on my kids and kiss them goodnight … then online shopping until I fall asleep. What’s on your bookshelf? Gods and Kings: The Rise and Fall of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. You can’t live without? Family, friends, and laughter. Love to escape to? NYC—there is absolutely no place like it. I loved living in Manhattan and try to get back as often as I can. Advice you would give to your younger self? Don’t grow up too fast.

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY

Your style is? Athleisure most of the time. But, when I’m not in ‘mom mode’ attire, as my husband calls it, my look includes pieces from both fast fashion and higher-end brands. Can’t leave the house without? Sunglasses. Transportation? Blacked-out Suburban. If you think a politician is in town, more than likely it is just the Lockharts making a Starbucks run. Place to eat? Egg Harbor, Fuller House, and Lou Malnati’s. Shop? Oakbrook Center, the many great shops in Hinsdale, and online. Best thing about the country? The people and downtown. Worst thing about the country? Needing quarters for the parking meters. The perfect day is? Getting a blowout at Ten Friends, meeting up with friends and their kids at a park, lunch at Fuller House, and then hanging out with our amazing neighbors in our cul-de-sac.

WHEN IN TOWN

Your style is? More fashion over function; this always includes a heel. Can’t leave the house without? My phone. I didn’t live in downtown Chicago for very long, so I still resort to Google maps to get around and to park. Place to eat? Bavettes and Chicago Q. Shop? I love to stop and see Greg at Michael Kors Collection store and then hit the rest of the shops on Michigan Avenue and Oak Street. Best thing about town? Street fashion—I get inspiration from it. Worst thing about town? The honking. The perfect day is? Getting my hair styled by Kelly Purlee, then lunch at the RL Café with my husband, and shopping.
