Coolsculpting: Safe, Effective Alternative To Surgery

For many men and women, diet and exercise aren’t enough to help eliminate fat from some of the most stubborn areas of their bodies. For some women, their bellies just don’t retain the same shape their bodies had before having children, and for other men and women, genetics is to blame.
For all those men and women dealing with unwanted, persistent fat, a new treatment center in Hinsdale offers a safe, non-surgical way to remove fat cells—permanently. The Cool Contour recently opened by two women who truly believe in the science behind CoolSculpting, the only FDA-cleared, noninvasive permanent fat removal treatment. Dr. Cindy Brooks, the center’s founder and medical director, partnered with fellow local mom Katrina Kern, co-founder and certified CoolSculpting technician, to open a facility providing this smart new option for nonsurgical fat removal after they personally saw the results themselves.
“I strongly believe in the mind, body, and spirit—and treating all three of those,” says Dr. Brooks. She received her medical degree from the University of Florida, and then completed a five-year residency in diagnostic radiology at Virginia Commonwealth University. She then began fellowship training at Northwestern, specializing in women’s imaging, where she joined the faculty after her training.
It was during her training at Northwestern that Dr. Brooks “learned that we do a good job treating physical ailments, but not the emotional ones,” she says. “How you feel about yourself is important…I especially want all men and women to feel self-confident and empowered.” During her time at Northwestern, Dr. Brooks began to truly appreciate the association between a patient’s overall health and happiness with their physical appearance, and began focusing on minimally invasive laser and aesthetic medical treatments. And then she met Kern, who had the same outlook on health and wellness, and they started drafting a business plan for the Cool Contour.
“We believe in the technology and science behind CoolSculpting,” says Kern. “There’s no downtime and no surgery.” The procedure uses a controlled cooling method called Cryolipolysis, which freezes fat cells. Then the body naturally metabolizes and absorbs them. At the Cool Contour, patients come in for a free consultation, and Dr. Brooks and Kern develop a specialized treatment plan for them. Probably the most common area of concern for patients is the belly, followed by the “love handles” region, as well as the area underneath the bra line and thighs, which are stubborn and difficult to exercise. The chin has also become a popular treatment option for many patients. Because it’s a non-invasive procedure, the risks are very minimal, Kern adds.
Each treatment site takes about 35 minutes, and during the procedure, patients can watch TV, catch up on email or social media—even have a glass of wine. Dr. Brooks says patients might feel a pulling, tugging, and mild pinching sensation at first, but it goes away quickly since CoolSculpting works as a natural anesthetic, numbing the area during the process. “I have a very low tolerance for pain, and I fell asleep during my treatment,” Dr. Brooks jokes. In addition, Cool Contour offers “Dual-sculpting,” where they can treat two areas simultaneously, reducing overall treatment time.
The best part? For some people, one treatment is all it takes. CoolSculpting eliminates the fat cells for good. “Once those fat cells are gone, they don’t have to keep coming back for additional treatments,” Kern says, unless they want to see even better results.
Recently, Dr. Brooks and Kern have partnered with Jennifer Del Giudice, founder of LUXXE Organix in downtown Hinsdale, and currently offer their services inside this location. “We have a synergistic partnership as we both believe in the least invasive approach, using natural products and services to treat the mind, body, and spirit,” says Dr. Brooks.
The Cool Contour is planning a special event on March 8 to educate potential patients about their services and how CoolSculpting works. During the open house event at LUXXE Organix, Dr. Brooks and Kern will perform live demonstrations and show various before-and-after pictures. In addition, clients will be able to learn about the other synergistic services offered by Del Giudice. There are two timings for the event, beginning at noon, followed by a second demonstration at 5:30.
“We make a really good team because we’re passionate about this and what we do,” says Kern. “It’s proven science that really works, and it’s safe.”
