Colleen M. Breems has been devoted to matrimonial and family law since the beginning of her legal career, working tirelessly to deliver results to the client in need. “I feel most rewarded when I work with individuals in the middle of crisis, and I can shepherd them to a better place than the one in which I found them,” says Breems, a partner at Beermann LLP. “It is also especially rewarding when I get happy and proud updates from the children I have represented. They all hold a special place in my heart.” In fact, fighting for the rights of children is what initially inspired Breems to become a lawyer. In addition to being an expert litigator, she is trained in collaborative divorce and often acts as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL), child representative, mediator, or parent coordinator.“I have always worked with children, and I have always had a passion in working with those who most need advocacy— including victims of domestic violence and children in the middle of family law disputes. I love being a voice for those who need it. Becoming a family law attorney felt like a natural choice, and being an attorney who advocates for children has been a calling. I could not imagine doing anything else.” One of her many philanthropic endeavors is serving as Vice President of the Advocacy Council of the Junior League of Chicago—a women’s voluntarism organization that trains women leaders. “I am passionate about this work, and all of the community service we provide to local women, children, and families,” she adds. “This work dovetails nicely with the work I do as a family law attorney, and allows me to expand my work into serving not just individuals, but the community.”
