Dr. Claus J. Fimmel and Kristhine Fidel Nague (A.P.N.) have joined Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health to expand the group’s involvement in the care of patients with liver diseases. They previously collaborated for over a decade, providing comprehensive liver care for patients in the Northern suburbs of Chicago. They are excited to share their expertise with their new colleagues.

Chronic liver disease has been recognized as an important and growing priority, both in the United States and internationally. In particular, metabolic liver disease (often referred to as “fatty liver”) is affecting a growing percentage of the U.S. population. Approximately 40 percent of Americans currently have excess fat in their livers. While most of them do not develop serious liver disease, up to 20 percent will develop progressive liver inflammation and scarring (cirrhosis) over a period of years or even decades. Identifying patients who are at risk for the development of cirrhosis, liver failure, and primary liver cancer is critically important. Dr. Fimmel and Mrs. Nague will utilize cutting-edge diagnostic tests, including a novel ultrasound-based elastography test (“Velacur”), for an accurate, non-invasive assessment of the patient’s liver. Next, they will apply specific treatment strategies to reduce liver injury and promote liver healing, including dietary and lifestyle modifications. Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health has a team of dietitians, health psychologists, and physical therapists who will help the patient establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle, using a one-stop shop approach. Potential treatment options for patients with more advanced disease will include a variety of medications, including weight loss drugs and a unique new drug that specifically targets the liver. Dr. Fimmel anticipates FDA-approval for additional breakthrough medications that will revolutionize patient care in this important area over the next few years.
