Classic Allure

Tucked away in a corner of Lake Bluff is a gem hiding in plain sight. With 2,000 square feet of space, Trading Treasures is the ultimate spot for vintage lovers and furniture seekers alike. Curated by owner Sam Davie, it houses an ever-evolving collection of home décor ranging from furniture to lighting and accessories. The furniture consignment store is truly a spot where storied pieces find new life with new owners.
When Davie set about redecorating her home in 2015, she soon began the arduous process of selling furniture that no longer fit her aesthetic. At the same time, she found herself scouring estate sales and online sites for the perfect pieces to complete her vision. Chatting with friends about what was becoming a time-consuming endeavor, she discovered challenges and opportunities. Home renovators and sellers both were overwhelmed by the paring down process. A lack of an outlet for efficiently discarding furniture led sellers to lose out on opportunities to sell otherwise valuable pieces. Similarly, new home buyers and their decorators wished for a trusted resource through which to obtain high-quality vintage and contemporary furniture and accessories at reasonable prices. Seeing space in the marketplace to develop a creative solution to help home sellers, renovators, and designers, Davie launched the unique furniture consignment business, Trading Treasures.
“Clients send me photos of furniture and home décor all the time,” says Davie. “Now, with years of experience, I’m able to quickly provide a reasonable assessment of the consignment value for each piece through a review of the photos and a quick conversation. On the flip side, designers and clients send me photos of rooms with a blank spot and ask for my help in finding the perfect addition.” As a fourth-generation Lake Forest resident, Davie is a trusted neighbor to turn to when not sure how to slim down a home prior to being listed for sale.
Trading Treasures’ collection is a mix of high-end designer selected furniture, vintage finds, and gently-used pieces from the likes of Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn. “We are a perfect stop for parents looking to furnish their children’s first apartment and new home buyers looking for good values when furnishing their first larger suburban dream homes,” shares Davie. “My most active clientele includes some of our areas most respected designers with an eye for that perfect piece in need of a simple change of hardware or paint color to completely reinvent and breathe new life into what will grace their clients’ homes for years to come.” For those overwhelmed at the idea of shopping vintage? Davie is your trusted advisor.
It’s all in her tag line: “Trading the used, to treasure it new,” Davie’s business model encourages sustainability ensuring high quality and long-lasting pieces see a second and third act. With an eye toward the environment, Davie is acutely aware of the positive effects of finding new homes for valuable pieces of furniture. And one unexpected perk of the job? “I recently opened up an issue of Forest & Bluff and saw a beautiful photo including a painting previously purchased at Trading Treasures,” Davie enthuses. A small world indeed.
