CHAMPIONS OF CARE

The partnership between University of Chicago Medicine and AdventHealth has seamlessly united two health care powerhouses into one unparalleled medical giant, making Hinsdale and the Western Suburbs the center of medical excellence. That’s in due partially because of the involvement of DR. SANDRA VALAITIS and KAREN FIASCONE.

What are you most proud of doing? Dr. Valaitis: I am proud to be a skilled surgeon earning a reputation as a “Top Doctor.” With the help of my team, I built a urogynecology program of excellence at UChicago Medicine providing office-based and minimally invasive surgical treatments for pelvic floor disorders. Additionally, I am very proud to be appointed Chief Physician for the AdventHealth Partnership at UChicago Medicine to help with clinical integration and program development for the joint venture. And, I’ve done it all while wearing heels, raising two fantastic children, and being a supportive wife to an outstanding husband!

What is the most important characteristic of an effective leader? Fiascone: Empathy. Effective leaders listen more than they speak and try to put themselves in the shoes of the people they are working with. Making human connections and seeing others as individuals, increases the chances to work well together.

What meaningful lesson did you learn in your first job? Dr. Valaitis: Early on in your career, don’t say “no” very often. The more experiences and opportunities you get, the more you will learn and grow.

Who is your role model and why? Fiascone: My mom, Barbara Jones. A woman ahead of her time, she took her incredible skills and focused them on community service, making Hinsdale an even better place to live. Her legacy lives on in the many organizations she helped, and her service inspires me every day.
