Beautifully Bare

It’s that time of year again. Spring and summer mean baring your legs in shorts, skirts, and bathing suits. While warm weather is a relief for most Midwesterners, it can also cause anxiety when we think about our physical appearance. This can be especially true for those who suffer from spider or varicose veins.
Luckily, Dr. David Loiterman has been working as a cardiovascular specialist in the Chicago area for over 30 years, treating more than 16,000 patients in that time period. His current boutique medical practice, Chicago Legs, has been in Hinsdale since 2011, and has treated more than 500 patients with vein and circulation problems since then, helping them reveal beautiful legs year-round at an affordable price.
Varicose and spider vein treatment at hospitals or surgical centers can be costly, but at Chicago Legs Dr. Loiterman delivers the same results at a fraction of the price through ultrasound and other methods.
After completing four years of medical school and four years as a surgical resident, Dr. Loiterman was named as chief resident at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He subsequently accepted a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, followed by a Thoracic Surgery Fellowship at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, part of Columbia University Medical School back in New York.
Recognized by his peers, Dr. Loiterman is former board chair and president of the Chicago Medical Society and currently serves as a director on the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce Board. He has frequently been recognized by Castle-Connelly and other rating services as one of the top vascular specialists in Illinois.
Currently, about 90-percent of his practice time is devoted to treating varicose and spider veins. The other 10-percent is focused on providing second and third opinions for complex cardiovascular clinical conditions and consultation, guidance, and advice on Public Health policy. Dr. Loiterman uses ultrasound guided laser therapy to treat vein patients in a non-invasive, painless way, without local anesthesia.
“These treatments are very, very safe and effective,” Dr. Loiterman says, “and there are constantly new developments in the field that remain safe and are even more cost effective.”
In one process, Sclerotherapy, Dr. Loiterman injects varicose veins with a sealant solution, which closes the damaged valve and redirects blood to healthier veins. In laser treatment, sophisticated ultrasound technology is used to identify where the leak is located, as well as the degree of reversed flow and pressure, and then welded together with a microscopic medical laser. The blood flow in the vascular system then adjusts and the backed-up blood, which caused the varicose veins, begins to flow naturally again.
“With continual advancement in in ultrasound diagnostics, we have been able to avoid more costly and invasive mechanical closures,” Loiterman says.
Of course, some advanced cases require more work, and Dr. Loiterman offers Endoscopic Vein Surgery. No matter how difficult you think your veins may be to treat, chances are Chicago Legs can help, just in time for spring.
“I’ve had many patients with varicose veins that might appear complex and difficult,” says Dr. Loiterman. “But often all it takes is one or two office treatments and the whole problem is resolved without a hospital visit and often at approximately half the price. I don’t see myself as an interchangeable ‘health care provider,’ but rather as an experienced physician who enjoys providing cost-effective quality care.”
Dr. Loiterman is happy to have helped so many Hinsdale residents overcome their vein issues already and looks forward to helping more people in the coming years.
“I’m grateful to my patients here,” he adds, “and I encourage everyone to visit our website and learn more about what we do, so they can research all their options and feel comfortable in their skin.”
