DR. VICTORIA HUSTED MEDVEC leads by example. In addition to serving as CEO of her Medvec & Associates consulting firm for Fortune 100 clients, this sought-after global expert has been on the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management faculty for nearly 30 years and is a tireless advocate for advancing women into senior corporate roles. As the Adeline Barry Davee Professor of Management and Organizations, she co-founded and serves as Executive Director of Kellogg’s Center for Executive Women, while publishing research in top academic journals and such media outlets as the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the Washington Post, and The Today Show. Dr. Medvec created the Women Director Development Program, where for the last 15 years she has helped to prepare more than 800 senior executive women for roles on boards. The Lake Forest resident and mother of two sons also speaks across the country on topics relating to women in leadership, corporate governance, and board decision making.
Most rewarding part of what you do? I love teaching people how to negotiate effectively in every situation, and I find it most rewarding when I help them to negotiate for themselves.
How should women support other women? By providing honest feedback, offering connections to others, providing access to resources and funding, and being willing to stand up for them in tough conversations. We talk about the importance of sponsorship, but the critical question is, are we willing to sponsor a deserving woman when others are not?
How do you inspire others? I speak to audiences about the strategies presented in my bestselling book, Negotiate Without Fear. I think I am most inspiring, though, when I reveal how I personally use these strategies to confidently negotiate every day in my life.
