From its humble origins with just 30 artists and 1,500 attendees, Art in the Barn has grown to showcase the works of over 175 juried artists, drawing more than 5,000 art enthusiasts each year. This year, celebrating its 50th season set against the picturesque backdrop of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital’s sprawling grounds in Barrington, Art in the Barn continues to celebrate the vibrant intersection of art and community in a uniquely enchanting setting.
The force behind this artful experiential masterpiece is led by Sharon Vogel, Art in the Barn’s co-chair for the past 24 years. Joining her is co-chair Megan Clarke. Together, they embody a deep commitment to both community engagement and the appreciation of art. Their combined efforts and dedication help bring this cherished event to life, making it a beloved part of the local scene.
Artists participating in Art in the Barn undergo a rigorous selection process to be featured at this prestigious event. They must submit original works across a wide range of categories, including acrylics, ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, mixed media, oil, photography, sculpture, wood, drawing, pastels, and printmaking. Each submission is then evaluated by three professional art experts, who score the artwork in each medium. This meticulous process guarantees that only the highest quality art is showcased, enhancing the event’s esteemed reputation. Typically on the first day of the event, a master judge selects a winner of each category as well as the “Best of Show.”
Each year, this eagerly awaited event remains a beloved tradition, offering something special for both children and adults. “This community event is always so special,” Vogel says, highlighting attractions that are a huge hit like the children’s art tent, petting zoo, and entertainers who generously donate their time on the live stage. “We have over 400 volunteers, auxiliary members, Lions Club, Barrington Rotary, and several local real estate companies that help us with this event.”
The festival’s charm is enhanced by its rustic atmosphere, featuring haystack benches, tables near the famous brat food tent, and an array of treats like candy apples and popcorn. Food trucks and the Lions Club of Fox River Grove’s beer-and-wine truck further enrich the experience. The Smart Farm’s fresh produce stand adds to the vibrant, community-focused ambiance. “The name Art in the Barn really reflects this fabulous country atmosphere,” says Vogel. “It’s such a joy to see neighbors, friends, and co-workers enjoying the event, sitting on bales of hay, eating, drinking, and swaying to the music.”
However, the best part is what Art in the Barn brings. Not only does it highlight the importance of bringing art into communities, but it also raises funds for Good Shepherd Hospital. “Art in the Barn is one of Good Shepherd Hospital’s major fundraising events, organized by the volunteer auxiliary,” says Vogel. “The proceeds support scholarships for students pursuing careers in healthcare and contribute to various hospital projects and initiatives.”
