A Scientific Approach To Beauty

“The science of beauty is fun,” says Dr. Jessie Cheung, dermatologist and owner of DuPage Dermatology and Laser Center. And in a way, that kind of nicely sums up Dr. Cheung and her approach to medical and cosmetic skincare and body treatments. It’s easy to see when speaking with her that Dr. Cheung has a passion for this industry—she thinks it’s fun and rewarding—but she’s also very focused on the science behind dermatology and cosmetic procedures. She doesn’t want to offer patients anything but the best, most up-to-date and most proven products and procedures, so science and research help her to establish what she does (and doesn’t) provide to patients.
Dr. Cheung has been working as a dermatologist for 13 years. She studied and practiced in both Chicago and New York, and she spent time as an educator during that tenure as well. After moving back to Chicago after she got married, Dr. Cheung decided about a year ago to open her own practice, where she could offer only the best products and services.
“It’s a very fast-paced world where things are changing,” says Dr. Cheung, who spoke with Hinsdale Living on a Monday morning after returning from a conference in Florida where she had been learning the latest skincare and noninvasive medical procedures happening in Europe, Canada, and Asia. “You need to stay cutting edge to offer the best of what’s out there,” she adds.
In addition to finding evidence-based treatments for patients, one of Dr. Cheung’s other key principles to her practice is that people don’t want to have surgery anymore.
“They don’t want to be pulled and tucked and have anesthesia,” she says. “The pendulum has swung back to wanting a more natural look.”
Her practice is concentrating on how to produce that wanted “natural” look in the most noninvasive way. To fight aging, women need more volume in their skin, and they need to build the underlying support for it. She specializes in dermal fillers, skin-tightening lasers, and procedures like CoolSculpting, a science-based approach to fat reduction that freezes fat cells so they basically disappear. She uses calipers to measure faces to achieve better symmetry, and she uses skin complexion analyzers to help her determine the best course of treatment for most patients.
Most of Dr. Cheung’s patients are coming in for elective dermatologic cosmetic procedures, but she also works with skin cancer patients and teenagers with eczema and acne, among other things. But no matter what you’re seeing Dr. Cheung for, the experience will always be personal and professional.
“It’s a small personalized practice; It’s not a factory,” she says. “I believe in giving everyone time and helping them feel comfortable.”
